An Update On EffortsTo Prevent Gun Violence.

Monday, January 7, 2013 - 10:06 a.m.

The White House and Democratic lawmakers have vowed to introduce gun control legislation. A month after the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, a panel joins Diane to discuss prospective new actions and whether the momentum for change is slipping.

TOPICS: Constitution/Conservatism; Culture/Society; Politics/Elections
KEYWORDS: 2nd; banglist; democrats; govtabuse; guncontrol; liberalfascism; rights; secondamendment; sourcetitlenoturl; tyranny; youwillnotdisarmus
This was an NPR pannel assembled to intentionally dissemble (aka most people would have the opinion it is presenting lies) about second amendment rights and make it sound like the world would come to an end unless their worldview is adopted.

They now have created a twitter source for peole to report "gun deaths" for any reason. They are trying to create a tracking system ala the national debt clock.

it is on Twitter and is https://twitter.com/GunDeaths

the leftists on the air are saying the only inacuracy is they are not reporting ALL the deaths. This is an utter commie tool push by those at slate. If anything it should be pushed to the limit to make it statistically impossible. They include self defense, suicides, drug gangs, and accidents.

Any ideas how to stop them?

BTW Obamacare HAS a provision which PRECLUDES Doctors from collecting gun use information!

How Many People Have Been Killed by Guns Since Newtown?

Slate partners with @GunDeaths for an interactive, crowdsourced tally of the toll firearms have taken since Dec. 14.

The answer to the simple question in that headline is surprisingly hard to come by. So Slate and the Twitter feed @GunDeaths are collecting data for our crowdsourced interactive. This data is necessarily incomplete. But the more people who are paying attention, the better the data will be. You can help us draw a more complete picture of gun violence in America. If you know about a gun death in your community that isn’t represented here, please tweet @GunDeaths with a citation. (If you’re not on Twitter, you can email slatedata@gmail.com.) And if you’d like to use this data yourself for your own projects, it’s open. You can download it here.

Another trick to watch for is counting all gun deaths as criminal when they aren’t. They should be categorized as suicide, accidental, defensive, and murder.

Detroit is a good example of poor statistical reporting. The murder rate is high but that rate doesn’t make a distinction between murder and justifiable homicide which are primarily defensive. (Detroit has he highest justifiable homicide rate in the nation)

Momentum from Sandy Hook is slipping away fast as most Americans have a 30 second attention span. The NFL playoffs matter more. Also creative solutions are being formulated by industry to deal with the deranged shooter problem that will work.

I sent 'em an email saying they could add the 500 names from Chicago.

Don’t forget to send them your “death by firearms” reports of your successful deer, goose and other tasty game hunts. Also, send in your pets killed by cops articles.

Is there a Twitter page where you can report when a criminal is shot and killed by an armed citizen in self-defense?

INCONVENIENT FACT: According to no less an authority than the peer-reviewed Harvard Journal of Law & Public Policy, countries with stringent gun control laws have higher murder and suicide rates than those without.

DOCUMENTATION: “Would Banning Firearms Reduce Murder and Suicide?” A Review of International and Some Domestic Evidence by Don B. Kates and Gary Mauser, Volume 30, Number 2 of the Harvard Journal of Law & Public Policy, pages 649-694. (To download a PDF copy of the journal article, simply Google the title. It is available on the web free of charge.)

QUOTE FROM ARTICLE: “If you are surprised by our findings, so are we. We did not begin this research with any intent to “exonerate” handguns, but there it is — a negative finding, to be sure, but a negative finding is nevertheless a positive contribution. It directs us where not to aim public health resources.”

INDIRECTION: The trick hoplophobes always use is to say that America has higher gun-murder rates than other countries, but many of those “murders” are criminals killed in the act of committing violent crimes. Compare absolute murder rates, and the result is “more guns, less murder.” (Source: GunFacts.info);

SECOND INCONVENIENT FACT: According to DOJ crime statistics, guns are used by US citizens 2.5 million times per year to prevent violent crimes like rape, robbery, home-invasion and carjacking, 99% of the time without a shot being fired. (Source: GunFacts.info)

THIRD INCONVENIENT FACT: “Assault weapons” (AKA semiautomatic rifles) are used in less than 1% of gun crimes. (Source: GunFacts.info)

QUESTION: If gun-free zones make people safe, then why don’t we declare the immediate vicinity of the President and Vice-President to be gun-free zones and send the Secret Service home? Or are gun-free zones good enough for our kids, but not good enough for our overlords?

METAPHOR: America has more private gun ownership than most other countries, so naturally there are more gun murders. America also has more hospitals than most other countries, so naturally we have more people dying in hospitals. Does that mean we should outlaw hospitals?
