GOP Rep Matt Salmon: ‘It’s About Time’ For A Government Shutdown

Rep. Matt Salmon (R-AZ) paid a visit to CBS’ Face the Nation this past weekend, and argued that a government shutdown would do us all some good. Referring back to the 1995, Salmon argued a shutdown could bring about some real progress on the fiscal front.

“I was here during the government shutdown in 1995,” Salmon said, noting that there was a divided government at the time, with Democratic President Bill Clinton and a Republican Congress.

“I believe that that government shutdown actually gave us the impetus, as we went forward, to push toward some real serious compromise,” he added. “I think it drove Bill Clinton in a different direction, a very bipartisan direction.”

Specifically, Salmon pointed to welfare reform and a balanced budget.

“You think that’s a good idea?” Bob Schieffer asked.

“Yes, I do,” Salmon replied.

“You really do?” Schieffer reiterated.

“Yes, I think it’s about time,” he replied.

“I think it would be terribly irresponsible,” Rep. Rick Nolan (D-MN) countered. “The last thing we ever want to do is to essentially declare the United States of America bankrupt — that would just be terrible, it would be devastating.”

No, that would be a good start.

I agree. It’s about time Republicans showed some backbone and stood up to this administration. If they don’t, we’re done for!!!

What they are afraid of, is if the federal government gets shut down how many people will realize that they don’t really need them as much as they thought.

Shut the government and its thousands of agencies down for good. All that government should do is is military, border control, international dealings with other countries .

I do not disagree with the benefits of a shut down, but I don’t think it is wise for conservatives to explicitly say as much on a public forum. Actions speak louder than words.

Naturally the rats would fear a government shutdown - - the only people who would notice would be the Democrat party’s moocher base.
Shut it down.

The MSM and liberals (=democrats) will claim that not extending debt limit is defaulting on loans.

That is not correct. The cost of servicing the debt is less than 7% of the budget, and tax revenues are 60% of the budget.

So there is plenty of tax revenues to pay all debt obligations.

The feds can just furlough all federal agencies, postpone construction projects and postpone military purchases, and there will be enough tax money left to cover all social security checks, Medicare, Medicaid etc.

Shut her down.

Put me where the final light switch is. I will shut her off.

Stop the spending/ the waste. Most of the agencies are a repeat for the same job positions. Do the basis functions. Stop answering to the UN and this global one business. Enough. I am tired of paying for the slackers/food stamp queen with an over weight problem along with their 3 children all cramping inside a brand new SUV that I saw tonight at Publix. We balance our budgets at home. If we write a bad check, before you know it I suspect a deputy at the door with a summons... off to see the judge. No money for lights, no water, no rent no car no Big Mac or no movies. Works for us-why don't they live the same way in DC with our tax dollars.

Most of the government agencies are a repeat for the same job positions. Do the basis functions.

The same basic functions of nothing or just hurting the private businesses as in the EPA, FDA ,IRS,FEC ,FCC ,EEOC, OFCCP, etc.. So get rid of them ALL and we'll all be better off and have more freedom and our economy would work better.

We have been here before. I won’t believe it until it happens. Bonehead and his cronies do not have the guts to do this. In the end, they will just kick the can down the road a little more, enabling the Dear Leader and screwing another generation of children.

IMO the only thing that will fix this country is to stop the spending and “pork barrel” attachments to every piece of legislation that gets on the table. The best place to start is to ELIMINATE all add-on’s that have NOTHING to do with the purpose of the initial bill. Make it illegal to include such add-ons (if it isn’t already illegal). I would bet that there would be major reductions in spending if that ever happened (highly unlikely it will)
