McChrystal backs gun restrictions

Retired Gen. Stanley McChrystal backed banning assault weapons on Tuesday, saying guns like the M4 and M16 belong in the hands of soldiers, not on the streets.

”I spent a career carrying typically either a M16 and later, a M4 carbine,” McChrystal said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.” “And a M4 carbine fires a .223 caliber round, which is 5.56 millimeters, at about 3,000 feet per second. When it hits a human body, the effects are devastating. It’s designed to do that. That’s what our soldiers ought to carry.”

He added, “I personally don’t think there’s any need for that kind of weaponry on the streets and particularly around the schools in America. I believe that we’ve got to take a serious look — I understand everybody’s desire to have whatever they want — we have to protect our children and our police and we have to protect our population. And I think we have to take a very mature look at that.”

McChrystal, who resigned as the top commander in Afghanistan after a Rolling Stone article portrayed him criticizing President Barack Obama, was promoting his memoir, “My Share of the Task.”

Obama is preparing to introduce legislation aiming to prevent mass shootings by the end of the month. Vice President Joe Biden is leading a task force on the issue and is reportedly considering a ban on assault weapons.

“I think we have to look at this legislation,” McChrystal said. “The number of people killed by firearms is extraordinary compared to other nations. I don’t think we’re a bloodthirsty culture, and we need to look at everything we can do to safeguard our people.”

Currying favor for a “cabinet” post, or another pwned Hussein asset?

“Are we at last brought to such humiliating and debasing degradation that we cannot be trusted with arms for our defense? Where is the difference between having our arms in possession and under our direction, and having them under the management of Congress? If our defense be the real object of having those arms, in whose hands can they be trusted with more propriety, or equal safety to us, as in our own hands?”

― Patrick Henry

Then McChrystal is a traitor to the Constitution and to America.

You can’t buy the M4 or M16, only semi-automatic imitations.

Weren't there reports from Afghanistan that the M4 platform was not powerful enough. The ballistics are different between a Remington .223 and a SS109 and shame on McCrystal for disseminating false information.

The very atmosphere of firearms anywhere and everywhere restrains evil interference - they deserve a place of honor with all that's good.

“I don’t think we’re a bloodthirsty culture, and we need to look at everything we can do to safeguard our people.”

How about getting rid of the criminals, as in Chicago.?
I surely wish people would stop calling the AR15, Bushmaster, etc., an assault rifle. Most wouldn’t know an assault rifle if you stuck it up their ass.

Personally, i do think there is a need for that. Are we not equipping our soldiers with the best tech? Why would you deny someone the best tech to defend themselves? You don’t say, hey all you need is one smoke detector, everyone on the other floor is on there own. Or, you only need airbags in thefront seat, your backseat passengers are on there own. No one should determine what i need or not when it comes to defending myself or my family - but me. The whole discussion is plotless. The right to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed, period. It does not say based on demonstrated need. No one asks if you need a Facebook account to express yourself. No one is trying to limit you to ten friends or less. Our rights shall not be infringed. The bill of rights is not there to allow us to do anything, it is there to explicitly prevent the government from doing things.

McChrystal is a coward looking to personally enrich himself through book sales and in currying favor with the tyrant.

Well General, more people in America were killed by clubs and hammers last year than were killed by ALL rifles.

Civilians must be able to defend against tyranny!

THAT is the the “legitimate” NEED!

In my experience as a provost marshal operations officer and as a provost marshal, I briefed a lot of senior military on crime stats and law and order issues. Sadly, this is the opinion of a lot of senior military, probably more the rule than the exception. I have my theories as to why that is the case, but my data is purely anecdotal and supposition.

Gen. Schwarzkopf, outspoken NRA member, was something of an anomaly.
