“I think you need to put everything on the table,” Sen. Heidi Heitkamp, D-N.D, told ABC News‘ George Stephanopoulos this past Sunday, “but what I hear from the administration – and if the Washington Post is to be believed – that’s way, way in extreme of what I think is necessary or even should be talked about. And it’s not going to pass.”
The Washington Post article Heitkamp was referring to, reported that President Obama would soon seek to pass legislation “that would require universal background checks for firearm buyers, track the movement and sale of weapons through a national database, strengthen mental health checks, and stiffen penalties for carrying guns near schools or giving them to minors.” And Obama wants all of this “by the end of January” according to The Boston Herald.
While this ambitious agenda and timing may be music to blue state Democrat ears, it can only be a headache for red state Democrats like Heitkamp … and she isn’t even up for reelection this cycle. A total of seven Democratic Senators from states that Mitt Romney carried in 2012 are up for election in 2014. And six of those Senators (Sens. Mark Begich, D-Alaska, Mark Pryor, D-Ark., Mary Landrieu, D-La., Max Baucus, D-Mont., Tim Johnson, D-S.D., and Jay Rockefeler, D-W.V.) hail from states that Romney carried by double-digits. Only North Carolina’s Kay Hagan will face an electorate that Obama came close to winning in 2012 (Romney +2) … and the only other Democrat on the ballot statewide in 2012 lost by 11.
And gun control is not the only issue Obama and Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., will ask red state Democrats to take tough votes on. If Obama is serious about not negotiating over the debt limit, then the Senate is going to have to pass a debt limit hike without any mitigating spending cuts sometime before March. Then there is the amnesty for 11 million illegal immigrants that Obama promised to address this month too.
Gun control, debt limit, amnesty … that is not an agenda red state Dems want to take home to states dominated by conservative voters.
Yes, this move by the lefties in DC could backfire and cause the Dems to lose the Senate and lose further ground in the House.
Not a good time to actually vote on silly gun restrictions when the leftist gun control folks are a bit out of their minds.
Wait until everybody calms down and look at this in depth and then respond with reasonable legislation if any. You will always have some on the left that are looking for a way to get bad legislation passed (never let a crisis go to waste), but this has to be ignored and delayed.
It is never a good time to pass emotional legislation. Let time pass and look at the problem rather than the object. Let common sense apply - a rather unknown reaction in the Congress these days.

I thought healthcare was gonna be a tough vote for some of the Dems. How’d that work out for us?
Dims don’t have big majorities in either House as they did the first 2 years of the Obama Administration.

The electorate has an attention span of two weeks. They could vote to create death camps for kittens and, as long as there were two weeks left before the election, it would be overwritten in the voter’s minds by a good photo op. (My cat has a longer attention span than a low information voter.)
I’m sure they’ll all fall in line with their supreme ruler just like they do on everything else. Obama will make them offers they can’t refuse. You know, the usual. They are all cowards who serve their king rather than the American people.
If Virginia could elect a jerk like Kaine then I have no hope.

Bill Smith, Editor: Arkansas Senator Mark Pryor joined other liberal democrats in voting against repealing the federal health care law (Obamacare) which has been declared unconstitutional and void. The vote was on amendment offered to the FAA Re-authorization bill by Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) which was identical to the text of the House-passed bill (H.R. 2) to repeal the Democrats’ health care law. At last count the vote was 47 Yes and 51 No on the amendment.
Four hours prior to the vote, Senator Pryor responded as follows via email to my request for him to vote to repeal the bill. Note that his email response even promoted a non-government website:

On March 23, 2010, President Obama signed the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) into law. Webb says Pryor is “out of step” with Arkansas
Little Rock, Ark. – Republican Party of Arkansas (RPA) Chairman Doyle Webb issued the following statement after U.S. Senate Democrats, including Senator Mark Pryor (D-AR), voted 51-47 to block the repeal of Obamacare Wednesday:
“Yesterday Senator Mark Pryor voted to defend a law that destroys freedom of choice, raises the cost of health care, and has been declared unconstitutional by two federal judges. Senator Pryor cast a vote to oppress individual liberty, despite the fact Arkansas’ four Congressmen recently voted in a bi-partisan manner to repeal the harmful law.
“We applaud Senator John Boozman for defending individual freedom, listening to Arkansans and voting to repeal Obamacare.
“Senator Pryor’s blatant disregard for the overwhelming majority of Arkansans who object to all or some of the President’s health care law demonstrates he is largely out of step with Arkansas values.”
Yeah, that’ll make a big difference to them. They’ve got their lifetime pension and healthcare, and fortunes they’ve somehow, gosh I wonder how, managed to acquire while in office.

Anybody know if that bonehead Sen. Jon Tester has said anything? I understand he has a poor rating with the NRA. Hard to believe he was even elected in Montana.
