Backlash Against Wendy’s, Taco Bell for Cutting Hours and Blaming Obamacare By Elizabeth S. Mitchell on January 9, 2013 12:11 PM

Few things grab the public’s attention like a celebrity-backed boycott, protest, or backlash against a specific brand or company. Today, Wendy’s and Taco Bell find themselves on the wrong end of just this sort of upheaval.

Roughly 100 Wendy’s employees in the Omaha, Nebraska area will have their weekly schedules reduced to 28 hours a week so that they will no longer qualify for the health care benefits that “Obamacare” mandates for full-time employees. A Taco Bell in Guthrie, Oklahoma enacted a similar policy.

Even though these underhanded approaches seem unique to these specific franchises, the backlash against the Wendy’s and Taco Bell corporations has been swift.

Celebrities like Castle star Nathan Fillion and comedian Sarah Silverman voiced their outrage via Twitter, and many people pledged to avoid not just those specific locations, but all restaurants owned by the chains in question.

This could go several ways. If the current chains back down, they will be replaced with new chains who start business with primarily part-time workers. Without the bad press of cuts, these chains will win on price.

A second scenario is that the unions might see this is as an opportunity to attempt to unionize fast food workers nation-wide.

My mission is to go to Taco Bell, eat a bean burrito, and aim in the general direction of said celebrities.

“If the current chains back down, they will be replaced with new chains who start business with primarily part-time workers. Without the bad press of cuts, these chains will win on price.”

That was how Wal-Mart did it; 25 years ago their innovative new strategy of using part-timers, no benefits, etc. was hailed as a model arrangement, and look where they are now.

Go for it, Wendy’s and Taco Bell! Let’s go to civil disobedience and passive resistance. We don’t like Obamacare either.

“Makes you wonder how people so stupid have made it this far in life.”

Because they are admired by equally stupid fans? Beyond that, I don’t have a clue.

Actually I prefer Taco Bueno but they will probably be cutting hours too so they will need my business to survive. LOL.

Hope so. Imagine all the no votes when management explains to the workers that not only will the union take a big chunk of their min wage 25 hour job in dies, but hours will be further cut AGAIN to make up the costs unions impose.

I say do it!

My first “real” job, where I had FICA taxes taken out of my pay, was at a Wendy's.
I was 16 years old, and a high school student living at home.

It was, and still is, considered an entry level working position. I really don't remember how many hours a week I worked back then, but I do remember thinking I made more money babysitting my neighbors kids, and getting paid cash, than I did for working hard in an ugly uniform putting up with incredibly rude customers.

Employee turnover was high.
Those who made it past the 90 day point would have quit if we were forced to buy “health insurance” out of our minuscule wages.

Good for Wendy's franchises for just saying no to Obamacare!

Perhaps that is the incentive needed to kick out all the illegals and welfare cheats from the workforce!

(Ever in search of a silver lining)

elections have consequences. Romney and a Republican senate would have reversed Obama care and prevented this democrat manufactured crisis.

So far, they still have jobs. Not these people. Check out all the closings listed on this site.Daily Job Cuts I wish we had a way to send condolence cards to the people - in particular the Obama voters - at these companies.

Just the last year or two, the 99cent value menu price went up and the size of the meals decreased. Those meals stayed the same for 20 years, then the destroyer took office.

Maybe, this is Mooches idea on how to get the rest of us too lose weight and save the food for her.

Missed a third scenario: We see a lot fewer fast food restaurants. We do have a massive supply of restaurants, I’ve read that there are enough restaurant seats nationwide for all of us to sit down at the same time.

It wouldn’t be my choice and it will be hell on unemployment.
