VALLEJO, Calif. (AP) A California man once sentenced to death for killing two people in the 1960s was under arrest Thursday after police said he led officers to the body of his 89-year-old mother.
-- SNIP --
The California Supreme Court reversed his death sentence in 1969 after finding 12 prospective jurors were dismissed because they said they opposed the death penalty. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled a year earlier that such jurors shouldn't be automatically excluded from a death penalty case unless they make clear they can't impose capital punishment under any circumstance.
Stanworth was sentenced to death again after a second trial. But in 1974, his death sentence was converted to life in prison....
[You probably know the history there. Since direct quoting bumps against one version of the excerpt limit, here's a summary of what else I wanted to quote: according to records, Stanworth was released from prison in 1990 and released from parole in 1993. The article gives no reason for his release.]

...oh, wait.
How ‘bout that justice system. There is a big difference between “life in prison” (until we let you go) and the death penalty. What a joke.
Let me guess...’The Innocence Project’ got him off of Death Row...to kill again!
There has GOT to be someone tracking those bleeding heart DOPES who get these cretins released so they can prey upon society (and family members) again!

(And, yes. I’m a mean-spirited ConservaTarian, LOL!)
IIRC, the Rose Byrd Court got this evil murdered off.
I read the article and her court also got Manson and his followers off, too, because Rose Byrd’s Court decided the death penalty was cruel and unusual punishment.
The bleeding heart defense lawyers in CA, jam up the system with appeals after appeal, so that Death Row is so overloaded, none will be executed in a timely fashion, if ever.
This prisoner will eventually murder a guard, a visitor, a fellow white collar crime convict ~ somebody.
Dean said the only thing that happens when you commute their sentence is you save a killer you know for some innocent person you don't know.
He preferred the death penalty for that type of mad dog killer.
“iIRC, the Rose Byrd Court got this evil murdered off.”
She was actually Rose Elizabeth Bird, a Jerry the Fairy pick from his first turn at the wheel, that we voted off the island. But not before she did a lot of harm. The only good news is that the Grim Reaper took notice and offed her. OTOH the bunch on our current batch of Supremes are about as bad. They wrote 27 pages to tell us all why it was a right and just thing to keep this sicko around so he could kill the woman who gave him life.
Correct.
I have met two men who were on Death Row, one who made the walk to the death chamber twice, who are now free.
If you sentence people to death, you had better be damn sure that they committed the crime in question.
And the state must make their case, not withhold evidence or play games with jury selection.
If not, you are going to execute some innocent folks.
This is not an Innocence Project case.
I remember her, but obviously not the spelling of her name. Glad to hear she’s no longer taking up air space.
Oh yeah, BOR the sanctimonious dolt. His idea includes “hard labor,” in a remote location which are unrealistic pipe dreams.
I completely admired Sharon’s Mom, Doris Tate, and her sisters for their unyielding determination to see that Manson and the women never saw the light of day outside their respective prisons. Like you said, the only living sister, Debbie, is still valiant in the cause and I try to watch for Van Houten’s and Krenwinkle’s parole hearings so that I can send a back-up letters of support to her. Recall that Atkins tried to get a mercy release for her “brain cancer” which was, (Thank God) denied?
No, the crime is that in our political system no one’s accountable!
Nothing to do with a life sentence...but we just (last week) had a bizarre example here of the system breaking down.
A 21-year-old who had spent a couple of years in prison was released (his sentence was up). Upon his release workers at the prison found a notebook that he had kept that depicted extremely violent rape. They did notify law enforcement according to news stories.
Not soon enough. Within a day or two of his release...he kidnapped a female acquaintance, duct-taped her up, and had her in the backseat of the car. Fortunately, the roads were icy, and he went in the ditch. Thankfully a local farmer saw the accident and stopped to help...whereupon the freak ran away...leaving the bound victim in the car. The farmer took the victim to his house, and they notified authorities.
They caught him...but while searching for him, they found the dead body of his Mother at the family home. Evil walks amongst us...I wonder how long he had been planning that, and what the rest of his “plan” entailed?
People in California deserve each other.
89 years old? No problem, she was almost dead anyway.
He was just helping to implement Soetorocare.
his 89-year-old mother... His lawyer’s defense will probably be euthanasia!
I am sure there are far more of them lurking around our prisons, or out on the street, than there are innocent men lined up on Death Row.
So, if it's a probability game of minimizing the murder of the innocent, we have to kill the ones we got to save the truly innocent.
Oh heck! The defendant’s mother probably spent years trying to get her “baby” out of prison and justifying his criminal behavior.
