Capping three days of meetings on ways to stem gun violence in light of the Connecticut shootings last month, Vice President Joe Biden said on Friday he was interested in technology that would keep a gun from being fired by anyone other than the person who bought it.

And it became clear that President Barack Obama plans to push for a controversial ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines to stem gun violence in his State of the Union address next month. …

Technology for so-called “smart guns” is being developed, although, so far there has been little demand for it. Various techniques such as fingerprint recognition or the wearing of a magnetic ring would prevent anyone other than a weapon’s registered owner from firing it.

The National Rifle Association and other groups have come out against smart guns in the past and did not respond to a New York Times article on the subject this week. Instead, the NRA has placed most the blame for recent mass shootings on violent video games and lack of treatment for the mentally ill. …

God, I hope they’d be smarter than him.

Like smart bombs, only hopefully we won’t kill as many innocent people as our government.

Scenario: Armed Burglar enters family home. Husband held at gunpoint, then tied up as burglar burgles. Wife is upstairs, hears ruckus downstairs, and goes for gun in side drawer by bedside in order to save husband, after calling 911. Grabs gun, tiptoes down stairway to shoot at burglar. Whoops, scenario goes sour. Gun only recognizes her husband’s imprint, not hers. She goes to shoot. Bad ending guaranteed.

Soooooo..... would this mean Hubby wouldn't be able to shoot the guns I bought for him as presents but are registered under my name?

I sense a flaw in the plan.....

What’s his plan for the over 200 million weapons currently in circulation? These people are just plain stupid.

Biden and crew probably imagine 'smart guns' refers only to the ability of the owner or designated hit man to fire a particular weapon.

In reality, given microminiaturization of all electronics including infrared guidance, radar, and heat sensing, it's been expanded to cover other things ~ including the bullets.

A total 'smart gun' system would be able to steer the rounds selectively so that head shots no longer need to be aimed by the operator, or so that they are avoided ~ something a police force might be required to do to minimize killing innocent people as is common in New York City.

Homeowners fearing a night time home invasion might well want the bullets to hit hands holding firearms ~ a flip of the switch to 'low albedo' and 'sweaty' probably ought to take care of that! Then, the 'grill" button ~annoyed by obnoxious rap would-be's wearing grills, this way if any of them ever break in your house YOU get even!~

Unless you really like to hit the range to hear the sounds it's possible that within 5 years we'll have 'smart guns' on the market that enable all users to simply dispense with prior training. They'll probably be very inexpensive ~ and in some cases all of the components will be printable on your home 3D printing system.

Think I"ll install one of those 'Democrat odor sensing' chips in the pistol grip ~ that'll make my gun leap off the nightstand and fire itself at any Democrat trying to slip into my bedroom.

This would not be good in my house. All of my weapons would jump out of my safe and point at my MIL when she came to visit.

NOT GOOD for my relationship with my wife....and I dearly love her.

It is high time we had some ‘smart’, as in intelligent, voters so we could begin to see an influx of ‘smart’, as in intelligent, politicians. Some good, rather than so much evil.

We have recently built up a vast storehouse of highly trained APS WRITERS ~ no doubt they can put in something to avoid having your gun leap off the table and shoot your MIL while, of course, leaving you the option to do otherwise!

http://www.icshi.net/worlds/images/weaponshopscolor.jpg ~ still for sale; still popular; still timely ~ still inspiring. No doubt folks have read the various Van Vogt critics ~ but this particular work isn't yet done ~ which is one of the features of his other works frequently criticized by folks who thought a good story ought to get wrapped up ~

Note that there's always a dictator or a totalitarian society in all of his madeup universe ~ and this one ~ The Weapons Shops ~ is where the individual can get even to a degree.
