Harry Truman was a public servant in the truest sense of the term. The David McCullough bio “Truman” is a wonderful (if long) read.
Why would they shoot their in-side guy?.
At the time Truman left office, there was no provision for any benefits for former presidents, including pension and Secrete Service protection Primarily due to Truman's financial position Congress enacted the Former Presidents Act in 1958. Truman accepted the benefits as have every former president since. (It is interesting to note that at the time he left office, Truman had lower approval ratings than Nixon had when he resigned.)
