Sales of Guns Soar in U.S. as Nation Weighs Tougher Limits
NY Times ^

As Washington focuses on what Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. will propose next week to curb gun violence, gun and ammunition sales are spiking in the rest of the country as people rush to expand their arsenals in advance of any restrictions that might be imposed.

People were crowded five deep at the tiny counter of a gun shop near Atlanta, where a pastor from Knoxville, Tenn., was among the customers who showed up in person after the store’s Web site halted sales because of low inventory. Emptying gun cases and bare shelves gave a picked-over feel to gun stores in many states. High-capacity magazines, which some state and federal officials want to ban or restrict, were selling briskly across the country: one Iowa dealer said that 30-round magazines were fetching five times what they sold for just weeks ago.

Well, when California outlawed AK-47's (semis) many years ago, I knew some who didn't turn them in. Once Cali also outlawed certain characteristics of scary "assault weapons" and mags to 10 rounds, plus now need a "bullet button" for mag release, no one I know has turned them in. In fact, many are going over to Arizona to purchase AR's and AK's to ignore the "bullet button" mandate.

People are just ignoring these senseless laws. They want protection from either the zombies (riots), the crazies (mass shootings) or their own government. I never thought I'd see so many anti-gun folks actually purchasing arms.

So agree. Few are going to adhere to a "grandfather" clause. The weapons are out there and few are going to relinquish. Makes me laugh every time I read about "buyback" programs and they get some 500 crappy POS's, like that is going to make a difference in the inner cities. Sure all the gang members were in line to turn in their Glocks.

Los Angeles was recently bragging about getting a rocket launcher (RPG), their words, in their "buyback". Turned out to be an old rusty mortar launcher that you couldn't pour enough water through to choke a lizard. Idiots, all.

I am encouraged that the populace is waking up. Unfortunately, it took too many massacres to get them off their American Idol rears. However, I say, "Welcome to the party, pal".

Is the gooberment really destroying mags that our troops bought for themselves? Evil bastids. Disgusting.

I don't really need much but I was thinking about getting some mags and other things that aren't the focus of this buying spree too. As far as what I want a Saiga 12 ga would really hit the spot but I don't think any are available right now and the prices are outrageous. These cur dog pols have accomplished raising prices through the roof without enacting a single law. Temporarily anyway.

Them too, but for clarity, it’s easy to use the turn of the year to our advantage. 2012 legal....always legal. The early days of Jan also, but it gets more ambiguous, exp. if Obama does an EO next week to ban transfer of semi-autos. (That’s the rumor.)

But for sure, legal in 2012, legal forever. Hang onto that dichotomy. Lots of crazy EOs and “laws” will come out in 2013, and “who struck John” will get confusing, depending on when, where and how something was purchased.

But for sure, legal in 2012, legal forever.

I guess any gun I buy from a private party was purchased in 2012 or before. So long as there is no paper of a transfer on it after 2012. Won't be hard to reach that agreement with the seller.

Me: "When did you buy it?"

Seller: "In '02."

Me: "And you sold it to me in '04!?!"

Seller: "Right."

"...if Obama does an EO next week to ban transfer of semi-autos. (That’s the rumor.)"

I highly doubt he's going to try for an EO to do anything.
He may be a totalitarian, but he's not stupid. That's why he appointed dipshit Biden to oversee some worthless committee. Bambi is covering his ass while trying to look authoritative. He's a Chicago thug and knows there is nothing he can do about our American gun culture, especially after the recent USSC ruling. Ironic that part of his legacy will be as the greatest gun salesman of all time.

I could be wrong and he can try, but I think that is one EO that will be over-ruled by Congress. If not, we'll all just ignore it, like he/they ignore the Constitution.

It’s just a rumor tossed over my transom. But we sure do live in “interesting times,” eh?

Which means a HUGE load is on our shoulders.

We must NOT be the generation that dropped Liberty’s torch!

I don't know about the "destroying" part, but you can bet the goobermint won't sell them on the surplus market. They will probably be stored in big fenced-in piles for 20-30 years first. Same thing as the "Korean" Garands the congress ordered brought back to the US for sale to civilians. Seen any action on that yet? :(

DoD tried about a year ago for a voluntary turn-in of Pmags by the troops, which was mocked. Now they say slight dimensional problems with a new experimental USMC machine gun means all Pmags must be surrendered. Never mind that Magpul has already been shipping the Pmag V3 to fix that very problem.

Magpul wants to keep millions of troops and civilians happy. DoD just needs to keep a couple of big contractors of aluminum magazines happy.

New aluminum mags seem okay, but after a few years of heavy use, are no longer seen as trustworthy. Pmags seem to go on forever, and if one goes bad, it's pretty obvious, because it's broken into pieces. No guessing about the feed lips remaining in the proper shape, or if there are subtle dents in the aluminum body.

Really? Guess you're forgetting about Clinton's retro-active tax back to the beginning of the year. That set a precedence back when and I would surmise that Bambi's lawyers are looking at that. However, like I said above, I really don't think he would use an EO. He doesn't have the balls. Even the Chicago Mafia knew when not to push too far.

Biden is running point for Bambi and he is a joke. Have you seen any of his meetings with various pro and con gun people the last days? He's shucking and jiving and laughing while enjoying the center of attention.

I sincerely believe nothing will come of all this talk. However, more reasoned discourse is happening regarding school guards. I agree with that, but believe they should be clandestine (non-uniform) like Air Marshalls. I also think the "Gun Free Zone" sign policies should be replaced with, "Armed Victim Free Zone - Attack At Your Peril" or something to that effect.

After earning my BSEE without recognition from anybody, excluding the wages in my new job, I went on to finish my Master’s, which isn’t likely to be advanced for various and sundry reasons.

Still, I felt that I deserved something for all of the work, and so blew $1000 on my M1A NM. Younger eyes are better, but that weapon put 10 rounds under a quarter at 100 yards over iron sights.

I still have it, as I do almost all of my weapons, although I did scope it.

And it’ll be the weapon in my hands if I have to “go out”.

1980 dollars, I grant you, but worth every dime.

I know there’s a gap between what the government shouldn’t do and reality but if those mags are personal property they shouldn’t be confiscating them. I get tired of repeating the phrase but ... that’s unAmerican.

Yes we do. I'm just fearful that when we're gone, if the Vets from the Persian Gulf, Iraq, and Afganiscrap wars will carry on. I have to admit, I'm getting very cynical of the American populace and their obsessions with "Housewives of who gives a shit", "Jersey Shitheads", and "Honey Booboo fat ass", etc. Very discouraging, not to mention the fact that the takers re-elected Obambi.

Still, read my tagline. Although I was never in combat, I would gladly run point. Well, at my age, walk point...haha. I'll take the bullet for my betters to advance. Take care, Trident holder. Later.

Okay, but I do I need black powder ammo to clear my sinuses?

My biggest disappointment in living in suburban America is that all we have is in-door ranges. No rifles or shotguns. Although I did pay a few bucks some months ago for a class on shotguns, mostly just to famfire (familiarization firing).

We practiced with a .410, 20 guage, 12 guage (870), and a semi-auto 12 guage (very cool). My only experience with a shotgun was many years ago during Navy while shooting from the shoulder. Learned how to shoot from the hip and under the armpit. I was surprised to find such little recoil from the hip and armpit...just swings in your arms if kept away from the body. Of course, not as accurate as from the shoulder.

However, I have a brilliant light and laser combo on my 870 for home defense. No, I'm not going to go hunting for intruders - can't believe how many macho guys think that is a good thing. My wife and I have the following protocol:

We lock the door in the closest room; call 911 and let them know about the intruder and that "we are in fear for our lives"; keep the line open; and hunker down with 12guage facing the door. If the intruder[s] try to gain entrance, I simply say, "the police are on the way". Depending how hard they're trying to gain entrance, I may say, "there's a shotgun behind this door, I will fire". And no, I will not count on the racking sound to deter them, as so many claim. I will already have one in the chamber. They get a warning and then get 9 bullets at once, and I can rack fast so another 9 bullets coming at them.

Our home-defense philosophy is let them take what they will rather than face a Prosecutor inquiry and/or a civil suit or worse, their weapons. This is California. However, enough pushing on the door, 00 buck is going to make its mess.

The CA "assault weapon" ban has completely fallen apart. It seems that the law is no match for technology.

The text of the law requires that banned firearms be listed by make and model. The AG can petition to add new models to the list, but that process takes longer than it does for all of the little machine shops across the country to churn out new models. The AG's gun detail couldn't keep up. New models appeared faster than they could ban them. So when Jerry Brown was AG, he recognized the writing on the wall and gave up on keeping the list up-to-date. (Yes, that Jerry Brown!) The last update to the list was in October of 2000. Now the State is awash in "off list" rifles. There is a thriving cottage industry turning out off-list AR lower receivers.

In essence, California no longer has an "assault weapon" ban.

That should work! If you touch it off in the pan of a flintlock it should neatly trim your mustache and eyebrows too.

Your home defense philosophy is a sound one IMO. All the legal expenses and hassles could be a nightmare.

FWIW a friend of mine was talking to a local popo not long ago about a thug who was threatening his adult son and him. Said friend knows all the local LEOs well as he's a gabber and has been a frequent breakfast customer of the same diner's they eat at for decades. Friend says to cop "if he comes around here threatening me again I'll put one right in his forehead." (Not an idle threat. He could and would do it.) Cop says to him "Whoa, no no, Dave, don't shoot him in the head. Don't do that. The DA will automatically bill it as a homicide. Put three in his chest but please don't shoot him in the head, Dave."

YMMV depending on the jurisdiction you live in but I thought I'd pass that conversation on.

She did not say what kind of gun he purchased. It could have been a rifle or a shotgun. I was not aware of the that quote. Cabela’s Hamburg Gun Library has some very expensive guns.....some are $50,000 pieces of history. I have no idea what he purchased. And I can only assume that he bought one because he is a dual citizen.

There are still a lot of loopholes that have to be wiggles through to make it legal to use a "bullet button" for your CA-legal 10-round magazine. If your rifle has even one forbidden "feature", the magazine must be installed and removed with a screwdriver or other tool, rather than the "bullet button" that they figured would solve all their evil magazine problems.

So some genius has come up with enough changes to make your AR15 "featureless" so you have the legal permission to continue to use the "bullet button". Still ten round mag limit, though.
