Daily Mirror editor Piers Morgan has been sacked after the newspaper conceded photos of British soldiers abusing an Iraqi were fake.
In a statement the Mirror said it had fallen victim to a "calculated and malicious hoax" and that it would be "inappropriate" for Morgan to continue.
The Queen's Lancashire Regiment (QLR) said the Mirror had endangered British troops by running the pictures.
Roger Goodman, of the QLR, said the regiment now felt "vindicated".
Mr Goodman added: "It is just a great pity it has taken so long... and that so much damage has been done in the meantime."

At a news conference in Preston on Friday afternoon, the regiment demonstrated to reporters aspects of uniform and equipment which it said proved the photographs were fake.

Wow, so Piers Morgan is of the Dan Rather, Peter Arnett school of journalism.
the trick with the faux photos not only destroyed his reputation, he can never repair it ~ guy is simply a professional punching bag.
I'd feel sorry for him but he's such a piece of scum.
People can even commit crimes against him and there's nothing he can do since his very complaint will be understood to be just another lie.

No need to feel sorry. He's laughing all the way to the bank and like Dan Rather, he is looking forward to lots of awards and testimonial dinners for his outstanding work in journalism.
I heard there were other perhaps unethical actions he did with that newspaper that were low down and dirty - had something to do with hearing phone calls he or those on the paper should’t have, going through certain people’s garbage, follwing them, etc.. I have forgotten the exact wording of that but the pictures weren’t all the things attributed to him. Wish I could find that again. I’ll do some research and see if I can find it.
But it makes sense, doesn’t it, just doing one unethical thing usually means there is more there. In his case, I don’t doubt he did it or approved of it which is the same thing.
One thing was phone hacking, getting into people’s voice mails. He testified about that recently, staying in this country to testify rather than going back there. So, these actions are still being investigated.
