LINCOLN — Gov. Dave Heineman called Tuesday for a "bold and courageous" plan to eliminate the state income tax, both individual and corporate.

In exchange, the governor would eliminate certain sales tax exemptions, though he deferred until later this week offering details of his proposed multi-billion dollar tax shift.

Heineman, a conservative Republican, unveiled his tax reform plan during his annual state of the state speech to the Nebraska Legislature.

The governor's two-year state budget plan calls for a 4.9 percent increase in spending.

I never understood Iowa, and why it is blue. Can you shed some light here? Is it farm subsidies?

I met a farmer while passing through Iowa this summer that told me it was a conservative state. Was he just reminiscing? BEAUTIFUL state - the air smelled so fresh and clean.

Uhh I KNOW that, I LIVE in Iowa AND work in BEBRASKA. SO I get to pay 2 States’ Taxes. The way I see it Iowa had done VERY little to merit me WANTING to stay and live in my Homestate(Born Boone County, Boone Iowa and was Raised in Ogden, IA until the US Navy 1980).

“I met a farmer while passing through Iowa this summer that told me it was a conservative state. Was he just reminiscing? BEAUTIFUL state - the air smelled so fresh and clean”. MOST “Farmers” are nothing more than Federal “Subsidy” LEECHES! MOST of them have NOT a “Conservative” Bone in their body. As far as “the air smelled so fresh and clean” you can get the SAME thing in NE, MO, PARTS of IL, SD, NE AND parts of MN, it is the Mid-West “Smell(just don’t get too close to a feedlot)”.

Wait for the details. If he means eliminating the tax exemption for food, raising the gasoline tax or taxes on any other essential to daily life items, then the tax climate might be worse rather than better.

I would like for the state income tax to go away, but not to merely be replaced with more of a burden spread out among the myriad of things they think they can tax.

I moved from Iowa to Nebraska 20-some years ago.

One of the better decisions I made.

Just try to stay away from Omaha and Lincoln.

My sister and her family live in IA, very liberal around IA City and university areas. Said sister and spouse are active campaigners for 0bama and his ilk, think the government is best able to make decisions about how to spend our money.

Hopefully a concerted effort by many governors, as Bobby Jindal is offering up the same thing.

The only way this can work is raise state taxes by getting more business in the State. You cant remove a deduction if your not taxing income?

You turn you state to corp tax and sales tax.

**The governor’s two-year state budget plan calls for a 4.9 percent increase in spending.**

This is what passes for a “conservative Republican” nowadays?

We are doomed.
