The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources says it's notifying about 5,000 people after an employee accessed their driving and motor vehicle records without authorization.
The agency said in a statement Tuesday that the employee is no longer employed by the DNR. Spokesman Chris Niskanen says he can't elaborate on that.
The DNR says it has asked the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension to investigate. No charges have been filed so far.
The DNR says its own investigation found no indication the data was sold, disclosed to others or used for criminal purposes. But the agency is advising the 5,000 affected people to monitor their credit reports.

Good luck with any privacy you once had.
Hardly a surprise.
Minnesota state employees have their own pecking order...
When an insurance company notified me of a breach of their security after doing nothing but giving me a quote for coverage they also offered me a free year of credit reports/monitoring from a 3 in one provider.
When the state gets compromised I get “hey, might wana monitor your credit!”
Your deal is a free year of tax increases and put on a watch list for complaining.
So what will be the punishment?
Dismissal with pay?
Pfft...these assholes need a severe punishment by tar and feathers. By the VICTIMS!
if it was only for a year.......
Hey, just because there’s one bad apple accessing some low-level personal data doesn’t mean that young, ethics-free, leftist hackers who give away military, diplomatic, and intelligence secrets and rig the 2012 election won’t do something like this when we all have our Free Healthcare database files.
Thanks TurboZamboni (and for pointing that out).
