Syracuse (WSYR-TV) -- The goal of a new statewide database in New York is to keep guns out of the hands of unstable people.

Mental health professionals are supposed to report patients who are considered a threat to themselves or others. Family therapist Theressa McMorris worries good intentions may be too broad since several of her clients could be considered temporarily suicidal.

That pesky unintended consequences thing strikes again.

Of course they will fail.

People who need a gun can easily obtain one, law or no law.

People won’t register because they know the next inevitable step is confiscation.

And forcing mental care professionals to violate the privacy of their patients to deter a possible future crime stifles the very kind of treatment liberals say they want for troubled people.

This is using the legislative equivalent of artillery to address a non-existent problem.

For a couple thousand years the only psychological help available was the priest; and the priest was forbidden from disclosing the secret of confession. Modern day doctors are required by law to spy upon their patients and report everything that looks interesting. No sane crazy man would ever see a doctor. A man has a depression because of a death in the family, goes to see a doctor for a quick prescription, and the next thing he knows is that he is listed as a lunatic in all government records. This would make it harder, if not impossible, to get various everyday licenses that people need to live their life.

On the other hand, Obamacare makes sure that the only place you can see a doctor is on the screen in a movie theater. So no harm done.

It really depends on the semantics.

Therapist, The Rapist... Semantics.

Liberals in a rush to fix problems stemming from a crisis inevitably end up creating new problems.

They ignore the first rule of the Hippocratic Oath: “When in doubt, do no harm.”

This new gun control law won’t stop future Adam Lanzas, that is for sure.

What's all this fuss about the rapists? Who cares what they think?

Therapist, The Rapist... Semantics.

Clever... and yet completely ignorant.

Not to worry. One of NY’s famously liberal jurists will throw out all the mental health provisions in due course. Thus leaving only the gun provisions that they wanted in the first place.

Well, I’m sure not going to go to a shrink now if that is what they are asking.

But then I never would have anyhow.

To #7: You ask whether “any one think(s) about consequences anymore?”

Not if you are a liberal, Democrat, Leftist, marxist or environmental wacko.

They lack the mental capacity to think not only rationally and logically, but also dimensionally (i.e. consequences).

That is what separated the more rational, logical, and far-thinking conservatives from the leftist mental deficients.

Unfortunately the insane are not only running the asylum, they are continually being reelected to do so.

I suspect that there are a lot more insane people out there in not only urban America, but now in suburbia and even conservative areas, than we ever knew.

Like a plague, they spread their mental diseases through miseducation, media disinformation and misinformation, Hollywood, some talk shows, and the body politique.

We’re gonna need a bigger can of “mental disease control” than we have now. Where it is going to come from, I just don’t know.

Such a nice little play on words may indeed be clever, but it is an insult to the thousands of mental health professionals, perpetuates an absurd and inaccurate stereotype and may cause some people to avoid seeking legitimate professional help.

Thanks for the response. I've dealt with such people since age 15, and have my share of PSYs on my transcript. So apologies if you were offended. Please take back the word 'ignorant' and we'll be cool.

I also find interesting the number of people I've encountered in the mental health field who have musical backgrounds.

Regardless of the efficacy of this, such a thing is a lot more plausible reason for people to avoid seeking legitimate professional help, than a smartass comment by me.
