Handguns cannot be purchased in the city of Chicago, but more than 7,400 guns were confiscated by police last year, according to a CNN report.
Now, Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy has voiced opposition to concealed carry in a city where last year more people were murdered than in Afghanistan.
When people say concealed carry, I say Trayvon Martin, McCarthy said.
He was speaking to a largely black audience at a Rainbow PUSH event in Chicago.
The Chicago Tribune reported McCarthy, Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr., local radio host Cliff Kelley and others discussed gun laws, Chicagos homicide rate and recent mass killings in Newtown, Conn., and Aurora, Colo., to a few hundred people.
McCarthy emphasized opposition to concealed carry, even though Illinois is the only statethat doesnt permit the practice, the Chicago paper noted.
Just because its 49 to one doesnt mean that Illinois is wrong, McCarthy said.
He insisted supporters of concealed carry dont understand the consequences.
When people say concealed carry, I say Trayvon Martin, McCarthy said, referring to the unarmed 17-year-old who was shot and killed last February by a neighborhood watch volunteer in Florida, sparking controversy across the country.
I say Trayvon Martin, McCarthy continued, according to the Tribune, because the answer to guns is not more guns, and just simply putting guns in peoples hands is going to lead to more tragedy.

Good information and comments here from Chicago Police Officers on the fraud on the public committed by the Chicago PD Superintendent:
“”Representative” Guns”
This is hilarious: Chicago Police Supt. Garry McCarthy held a news conference Monday where his department put on display several of the firearms seized during the first two weeks of 2013, according to a police news release.
But that wasnt exactly the case.
A police spokeswoman said McCarthy had hoped to display 25 weapons from among the more than 300 seized since Jan. 1 but in fact the ones shown were from last year. Some dated from last summer, according to inventory tags on the weapons.
Reporters attending the news conference at the Gresham Police District station, 7808 S Halsted St., noticed the inventory tags, and McCarthy was asked about them. He said the guns werent the actual ones seized in 2013, but were representative of them. Busted!
As posted here in numerous comment sections, theses photo ops are almost always staged. Staged with the same guns, over and over and over. Some reporter finally looked at the inventory tags and noticed they didn’t match the story being told. The article closes with this whopper: Police spokeswoman Melissa Stratton said the department had intended to show this years seizures, but the firearms werent inventoried in time. The weapons shown match the guns that we took off the street in characteristics like maker and caliber, she said.
The spokeswoman said future news conferences are expected to display the guns confiscated in the periods addressed. “...weren’t inventoried in time”? That’s a violation of General Order seeing as how all property seized must be inventoried by the end of the officer’s tour of duty. You think that coppers are just allowed to leave guns lying around district stations until they get around to inventorying them?
As to the future gun displays - they just won’t have dated inventory tags or the reporters won’t be allowed to approach the display tables. But it’ll be the same guns as last time.

CHICAGO (AP) - Political strategist David Axelrod says he believes Congress will act on gun-control legislation despite opposition from what he calls a “tremendously powerful” gun lobby.
