Obama's Long History of Radical, Anti-Constitutional Gun Control (Vanity)

I was shocked to hear some in my local media market trying to rewrite Obama as a gun-friendly, Second Amendment guy, just trying to introduce some “reasonable” regulation in an understandable reaction to the recent spate of "gun violence." The following links are provided to show that this is a complete mischaracterization, that Obama has in fact been out of step with the Second Amendment for a long time, and in fact has been focused for at least 17 years on the same kind of all-out ban that just passed in New York:

In 1996, Obama responded to a political questionnaire from Independent Voters of Illinois, saying yes he would support legislation to "ban the manufacture, sale and possession of handguns."

Two years later, in response to the Illinois State Legislative Election 1998 National Political Awareness Test, he agreed to the following propositions:

* Ban the sale or transfer of all forms of semi-automatic weapons.

* Increase state restrictions on the purchase and possession of firearms.

* Require manufacturers to provide child-safety locks with firearms.

In 1999 he proposed a series of legislative initiatives that would have put Illinois gun owners under such burdensome rules of ownership that it would, as explained later in Heller, defeat the central purpose of owning a gun, which is not to hunt deer, but to have a weapon readily available under emergent circumstances to defend human life. And as Heller teaches, when the burden becomes so great as to defeat the purpose of "Keeping and Bearing Arms," the right has been effectively denied.

In 2003 a bill was introduced in the Illinois legislature, and was supported by Barak Obama, that would, like the recently passed New York law, give such an broad definition of assault weapon that virtually no useful modern firearm would escape its net:
