I keep seeing stories like this but can someone answer a question for me?

Is there anything that REQUIRES state and local law enforcement to enforce federal laws to begin with? I know there are many liberal so called "sanctuary cities" that constantly brag that they forbid their local law enforcement from enforcing federal immigration law or working with federal agents on immigration.

Not a lawyer, but you seem to have answered your own question. Federal laws on immigration are nonenforced all the time, and sanctuary cities devoted to defying federal law are unmolested by the fed authorities.

To force a sheriff to enforce a law would probably require a specific court order.

You ask a good question. Recently the new mayor of San Diego ordered the police department to not enforce federal marijuana laws. The San Diego Police Department is complying with the mayor’s order.

Nothing I am aware of, however most federal crimes have corresponding state statutes, ie. drug possession, murder etc.
