Ladies and Gentlemen, I think we have our first ATF headquarters nominee for the guy most likely to be thrown under the bus to cover for his bosses.

George Gillette, being the lowest man on the Project Gunwalker totem pole, suspected something unusual when four men in sunglasses and black suits picked him up by his arms and legs and one of them said, “Lanny sent us.”

Central figure in ‘Gunrunner’ controversy refuses to talk to Examiner.

A central figure in the growing Project Gunrunner controversy not only declined to speak to the Seattle Gun Rights Examiner this morning, but abruptly hung up when asked about a meeting reportedly held earlier this week by other officials of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

George Gillette, assistant special agent in charge in ATF’s Phoenix field office, returned a call placed by this column to get his perspective on what appears to be a growing scandal that is now being covered by CBS, Fox News, the Washington Post and others. But he cut the call short rather than respond to a question about the reported ATF gathering Monday.

Gillette said he was not at the meeting, could not discuss any details and quickly ended the call. There are unconfirmed reports from several sources that Gillette has hired an attorney; one of the issues he could have put to rest.

Okay, this tracks with the report I had that Gillette had lawyered up and the rumor that he had approached Grassley for protection. Mr. Gillette, it seems, is the designated sacrificial lamb. Makes sense.

Fast and Furious: Obama's ATF Director Choice a "Slap in the Face"

By Katie Pavlich

1/18/2013

... Issa said in a statement. “Jones was first brought into the job of ATF Acting Director in the middle of the Fast and Furious scandal after Justice Department officials had falsely denied reckless conduct and allegations by his predecessor that there was an effort underway to shield the Department’s senior political appointees from the scandal. Because of the numerous ATF mistakes during his tenure as Acting Director pertaining to Fast and Furious, his nomination is a slap in the face to the family of fallen Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry, Mexican citizens whose murder has been linked to Fast and Furious weapons, and ATF whistleblowers whom he failed to support.”

Jones is notorious within ATF for retaliating against Fast and Furious whistleblowers. In July 2012, Jones warned ATF agents not to "jump their chain of command" and said if they did there would be "consequences." Issa sent Jones a letter the same month, warning about retaliation.
