In the summer of 2010, mourners lined the streets of Wales's capital city to pay tribute to a seven-year-old boy killed in a house fire. In fact, Yaseen Ali Ege was brutally beaten to death, and then set alight with barbecue fuel. By his mother. For failing to learn the Koran. Over the preceding months, Mom had used a stick, a rolling pin, and a hammer on her son, but, despite these incentives, he had memorized only a couple of pages. And so she killed him, and subsequently declared she felt "100 percent better."
This month, at Cardiff Crown Court, Mrs. Ege was sentenced and jailed by Mr. Justice Wyn Williams for what he declared "a dreadful crime" that had inflicted "a good deal of pain" on an innocent boy. The judge, however, was discreet enough not to pass comment on more basic cultural questions. He had no view on whether or not being forced to learn the Koran is an appropriate educational priority for a "Welsh" schoolboy, so long as the parental hammer and kerosene remain locked up in the toolshed. Nor on whether a child so raised can be a fully functioning member of Western society. Yaseen's headmistress at Radnor Primary School, Ann James, called him "a delightful little boy and beautifully behaved who always had a smile on his face," and forbore to mention that on the day of his murder he had been kept home from class and the "teddy bears' picnic" because his mother felt he needed to focus on his Koranic studies.

Chilling! I believe that this column is the most chilling that Steyn has ever written. There is no place in Western society for animals like this mother. Can they be deported?
These people are born like everyone else neither evil nor good, but needing to be socialized and taught society’s norms by their parents.
A parent can turn the little pooper into a sweet, lovable member of a civilized society.
Or a parent can turn a wailing, diaper-filling baby into an angry, hate-filled savage. This is exactly what the middle eastern death cult does.
There is no reason why any civilized country should allow even ONE member of the death cult to come in the country.

I grew up in WASPy coal mining town that was overrun in the early 1900s by Irish and Eastern European Catholics, because the WASPs needed (essentially) slaves to work in the mines. No one got along. In one little town you’d have an Irish church, a Slovak church, a Polish church, a Russian church. The Russians celebrated Christmas and New Years on different dates from everyone else, and so they were suspect about everything. Everyone had rifles and shotguns because everyone hunted. Anyway, I was born about 30 years after my grandparents came here and we were already assimilated. My grandparents still spoke the old language, but their kids (my parents’ generation) all spoke English without accents. Old religious traditions were kept in the homes. No one stuck their religious quirks in anyone else’s faces (not by the 1950s anyway). Everyone had disrespectful, funny names for everyone else — the Protestants were the proddy dogs, the Catholics were the mackeral snappers, the Jews were the Jukies. But no one walked around in European peasant garb spoiling for a fight. There was subtle pressure from the oldsters against intermarriage, even into the 1970s, but it wasn’t unbearable. By the 1970s we were all drinking and scr@wing in the woods together. So I guess my point is... to my eye, in my little town, it took about 60 or 70 years for everyone to forget where they came from and what religion everybody belonged to. And now with my kids, born in the 80s and 90s, there is no awareness of anyone’s background. So whatever. It’s all just a load of crap anyway.
Mark Steyn has seen the Muslims subsume Western Europe’s culture and warned Americans that it is coming here. As in Europe, few pay attention or think that ‘it can’t happen here’ Well, it can. Islam is a patriarchal social structure, not just another religion. It demands total fealty and punishes the slightest deviation in extreme ways, as the mother killing her son over his reluctance to memorize verses from the Muslim holy book. Steyn knows what he’s talking about. Americans should be very wary of any politician offering ‘special’ dispensation to Muslims that use their religion as a shield to hide the satanic, barbaric nature of Islam, a threat to western civilization that few seem to notice - or want to. As always, when they finally do, it will be far too late.

There, you've put your finger on the crucial difference between then, in the America of yesteryear, and now, in the "salad bowl" (as opposed to "melting pot") of today. There is a decided lack of assimilation on the part of new immigrants - at least, on the part of those from certain cultures. That's why I'm not so sanguine about the prospects of everybody "just getting along" in 60 or 70 years.

1. Boxcars, or,

If we do not choose option #1, we will end up with option #2 by default.

Your experience was between Judeo-Christian religions, which all have a very similar framework.
Islam is something else. I don’t think the melting pot you describe happens with them.

Your observations are good ones insofar as the history of your forbears are concerned.
There’s one problem, however.
Muslims DON’T intermix, they DON’T “forget where they came from”, and they DON’T forget which religion they belong to.
What’s to be done about that?
