Poll: Most see damage if US debt limit not raised

Most Americans think jarring economic problems will erupt if lawmakers fail to increase the government’s borrowing limit. Yet they’re torn over how or even whether to raise it, leaning toward Republican demands that any boost be accompanied by spending cuts.

According to an Associated Press-GfK poll, 53 percent say that if the debt limit is not extended and the U.S. defaults, the country will face a major economic crisis. An additional 27 percent say such a crisis would be somewhat likely, while just 17 percent largely dismiss the prospects of such damage. …

“The worst thing for the economy is for this Congress and this administration to do nothing to get our debt and deficits under control,” said Rep. Paul Ryan, the party’s 2012 vice presidential candidate who is chairman of the House Budget Committee. …

Sounds like loaded questions. Not atypical for leftist polls.

I think the US Mint should print $1M bills and give them to everyone who doesn’t have a job. I see great damage if this is not done. I’m pretty sure the AP will back me up on that.

The debt limit provides false quasi-cover for our insipid GOP congress. It allows them to posture as if they’re holding the line on spending, when they’ve actually cut nothing and the ceiling will never actually be used to limit spending.

The proper place for them to act is in not approving the spending in the first place.

Another drama where we all (should) know the outcome.

The Kabuki dance.

No taxes were going to go up either, some in the GOP assured.

More excuses for the Reps to cave again and postpone any confrontation with Obama. Newt has already said that the debt ceiling is the wrong fight. The Reps said the same thing about the fiscal cliff and raising taxes on the rich.

After they cave on the debt ceiling, reasons will be found to cave on sequestration. For example, in order to preserve the military and stop any further cuts, the Reps will agree to some more revenue increases, aka tax increases.

The sad reality is that neither party wants to cut spending.

Yup. When Obama was racking up $1.6T annual deficits, Paul Ryan came out with a "draconian" budget plan which got a lot of attention. Ryan wanted to cut $50B a year from the budget. An awful lot of Republicans said he was going too far.

I have despised Paul Ryan ever since. He's not serious about the budget. He (like virtually all of the GOP) is an enabler of Liberalism.

When you vote for the Republican, you allow the Liberals to run unopposed.

We are going to be damaged when our credit runs out too.

Which is the worst.

There should be no raise in the debt limit without cuts that will decrease the debt each year until it’s paid.

Damned right that’s a lot of cuts and yes it will hurt and hurt bad, But so will riots like in Greece, when we go belly up and cannot pay anyone.

polls... stinking polls.. most these idiot Americans don’t pay attention to any of this.

I don’t care squat about polls now. I only know 1 thing, and that is: that a good 52 % of our population are dumb, stupid, uninformed idiots.

Yep. I actually prefer honest RINOs to those who posture as conservatives.

I see no difference between the two. Honest and RINO are not the same. There is not such thing a an honest RINO.

I think that is a bunch of bull crap. You are either a conservative or you are not. Half of one is nothing. Half of one has got us nothing. We continue to sink in debt.
