Breaking: Journal News Taking Down Gun Map
The Wall Street Journal ^ | 18 January 2013 | Jacob Gershman

A New York suburban newspaper that came under criticism for publishing the names and addresses of pistol-permit holders has decided to remove the map from its web site, according to a spokesman for the publication.

Just before Christmas, in the wake of the Newtown school massacre, the Journal News published a map of the names and addresses of tens of thousands of pistol-permit holders in Rockland and Westchester counties outside of New York City.

The newspaper immediately faced a barrage of criticism from gun-owner advocates and some local public-safety officials. Conservative bloggers retaliated against the paper, posting the names and home addresses of Journal News editors and executives.

"I just want to know when they are going to let their armed guards go? Hypocrites!"

If this does end up in court, and I hope it does, will the journalists' armed guards be allowed in the courtroom, in the courthouse?

>>That’s a win.

No. It's not. From their press release:
With the passage this week of the NYSAFE gun law, which allows permit holders to request their names and addresses be removed from the public record, we decided to remove the gun permit data from lohud.com at 5 pm today.

They didn't do it because of public pressure. They didn't admit they were wrong. It's not a 'win' for freedom.

Good, though for better or worse, the internet does not come with an eraser. When I grew up in Rockland the Urinal-Spews was a liberal-leaning but decent paper. It went downhill ever since Gannet took them over.

A lot of gun owners want it known that they are packing to help deter criminal attempts against them.

but I must admit there seems to be little point to a counseled weapons perment if everyone knows you have one. The real criminal here was the Government official who released the list.

That is after the original crime of requiring a permit in the first place.

It should be much more generalized:

Criminals don’t follow your laws.

You're right, and they won't turn in their guns either. For that matter, only idiots will.

The paper’s cost for hiring armed security guards must have gotten too high.

Cuomo’s SAFE law make it illegal to reveal gun-owners’ names and addresses.

Wimps, they will give up the Second Amendment and strive for the First Amendment while not being capable of keeping either!
As long as it’s someone else’s back to burden it’s fine!
It’s the Libtard way!

i hope someone posts a map where all of them live, with their personal info displayed, and makes sure everyone knows their homes have no guns for defense.

Someone already posted their names and they were forced to hide all personal data. However a quick search on wikipedia shows that the paper is owned by the Gannett company there are bios of company execs there interesting reading.
