Air Force finds thousands of inappropriate items, including pornography (PC military running amok)

The Air Force announced Friday it had found hundreds of examples of pornography and tens of thousands of other inappropriate items in a recent sweep of bases and facilities worldwide.

Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Mark Welsh III in late November ordered wing commanders to scour work areas for pornographic or offensive materials that sexually objectify men or women, and for other “unprofessional” items.

The majority of 631 items deemed pornographic were uncovered in Air Education and Training Command, which oversees training at Lackland and other bases. While most were items like magazines or computer videos that were removed or deleted, investigators also identified 11 pornographic computer images that were “preserved for evidence,” according to a database provided by the Air Force.

Air Force officials said they could not comment the images, which could be part of a criminal investigation.

Other items classified as pornography might not meet the typical definition of the term, however. In the Pacific Air Forces command, the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition and Maxim were included in the porn list. The database noted that such magazines, as well as Playboy, are “readily available for purchase at AAFES.

(snip)

The most wide-ranging category covered 27,598 “inappropriate/offensive” items. It included sexually suggestive posters in public areas, obscene cartoons and more than 200 images of aircraft nose art, some dating to World War II. Air Force Special Operations command removed several examples found in the interior of its aircraft.

Can't have nekkid pitures of women in the USAF anymore, even on World War II nose art. They might as well ban cockpits and joysticks as well...

The wussification of the armed forces continues. I’m glad I retired years ago.

Cockpits have been called flight stations for some time now where I work and Joysticks are dependent on the function i.e. flight controller or weapon controller...

They would have passed out had they seen our hooch at FOB Bastogne, we had that thing lined with naked women. Then again the AF never seemed to stay on the ground very long in the A Shau and I don’t blame them.

Sharia is being implemented, starting where they can, in the military. At some point the military will need to disobey orders.

Yup, no fun of any kind. I really feel bad for the troops in Afghanistan. At least the Vietnam war had lots of opportunities for “recreation”.

The Air Force at Malmstrom AFB, MT spent over $50,000 in JP-8 fuel flying the Commanders around to the 15 Minuteman Launch Control Centers to ferret out porn in the “Porn Drawers.”

Yeah, and a trip to the aide station on Monday. :-)

The military needs a supply of whores while the religious pretend nothing is wrong with this.

Hence, cognitive dissonance is the observation.

With all of the stress from repeated deployments, uncertainty in remaining on active duty, financial issues, and the general pain-in-the-@@ of being in the AF our leaders go on a witch hunt for inappropriate images and porn?

Guess there wasn't enough real porn out there to justify everything. BTW - now that they have done away with operational readiness inspections guess they had to come up with something for all those IG teams to do.

Did my 20 1970-1990. When I came it the AF was like a college fraternity during pledge week and Vietnam was still killing friends and squadron mates on a daily basis. Just before I retired I was offered a two-year extension. Told the Sq CC to pound sand since the old AF had already died. Guess it has gotten even worse.

I remember the “shakedown” inspection in the first couple of days of basic at Lackland in 1960. They confiscated a bunch of “dirty books.” From that time on, Playboy centerfolds adorned almost every wall locker’s inside door. Nobody seemed to mind.

Pathetic. It looks like the nuns who ran my high school library have taken over the Air Force.

Periodically, the US military or parts thereof, experiences spasms in which they try to recreate the imaginary nostalgia that they used to be “God’s Army”, not in a religious sense, but a prudish morality sense.

It is always weird. For example, even General MacArthur(PBUH) fell prey to one such spasm, deciding that soldiers in Korea should not be issued condoms, because this would immorally encourage them to use them.

This lasted until the end of the next month, when the theater Medical Officer received the monthly venereal disease statistics report, and found out why it had skyrocketed. He allegedly went on a screaming tirade which ended in MacArthur’s(PBUH) office, still screaming. The order was quietly rescinded.

Other amusing efforts have been to somehow force combat soldiers to not drink alcohol, smoke cigarettes, wear clean and even ironed uniforms, shave on a daily basis, and never, ever to use bad language. The goals of such efforts were seldom accomplished.

So instead it has followed the adage of “A peacetime army changes its uniform.” That is, when the fighting is done, the emphasis returns from militancy and mission accomplishment; to militarism, things like drill & ceremonies, dressy uniforms of no combat value, dismissal of the competent overweight, smoking, drinking, swearing and other naughtiness, etc.

Because it is a major axiom of peacetime military commanders that “Soldiers who are not handsome and well practiced in etiquette cannot fight.” Which lasts until the next fight.

The US Navy discontinued issuing swords in 1942. After WWII, there was still some effort to bring them back.

You don’t think Playboy has undergone a transformation since 1960? It was trash then; I imagine it is closer to hard-core porn today.

I don’t know. It’s probably been 30 years since I’ve seen an issue of Playboy. From what I remember, it was definitely mild by today’s “standards.”

That’s fine, but don’t give me the crap about honor and principles and not disgracing the uniform then. If they want to act like alley cats, that’s their business. Just don’t tell me they are not being hypocrites when they come back to civilization and are dressed up in fancy uniforms, acting like perfect gentlemen, to escort some debutante at a formal dance.

I was a military brat. I am well aware of the phony front and the reality.
