Newfound Gap which is the main thoroughfare connecting Gatlinburg and Cherokee N.C., through the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, is closed indefinitely.

A landslide on the NC side of the Cherohala Skyway has closed that route indefinitely. Doesn't look too bad from the top, but...

It wont be a pleasant drive, both of those routes are heavily traveled by tractor trailers.

They are going to need serious engineering

HWY 64 from Cleveland you go east to Polk County..Ducktown, Coppertown and on to Murphy NC where you can get on HWY 74 to Bryson City and the 19 to Cherokee...
