Gov. Cuomo stood with the Rev. Al Sharpton in Harlem on Saturday to tout the states tough new firearms laws and how they can help neighborhoods plagued by gun violence.
Cuomo, in an address to the National Action Network to mark Martin Luther King Jr. Day, suggested the gun control legislation was another step on the road to the slain civil rights leaders vision of social justice.
We passed new gun laws, and we passed new gun laws on Martin Luther King Day, Cuomo said. Why? Because, its simple enough innocent people have died.
How many times as a society do we need to see tragedy after tragedy after tragedy before we act? he asked.
Cuomo highlighted the impact the law dubbed the New York SAFE Act would have in the historic upper Manhattan neighborhood. Seventy-five percent of violent deaths in Harlem [are] due to guns, Cuomo continued. We have to get these illegal guns off the street once and for all. We need services in the community to end the violence.
When Cuomo pushed through the new bill last week, New York became the first state in the nation to toughen its firearms regulations after the Newtown, Conn., school shooting.
The new law outlaws more types of assault weapons, eliminates ammunition magazines that carry more than seven rounds, increases the frequency of background checks and requires gun owners to renew their licenses every five years.
Sharpton, who has sometimes been a critic of Cuomo, applauded the governors efforts.
What has happened in the state of New York has laid a foundation for historic change, Sharpton said.
Gun owners and some Republicans in Albany have complained that the bill was rushed and is too restrictive.
Cuomos dash to pass new legislation has fueled whispers that he is shoring up his liberal bonafides in advance of a White House run four years from now.
The governor further touted his progressive agenda by slamming the NYPDs controversial stop-and-frisk program for yielding too many marijuana arrests for young minorities.
For a small amount of marijuana, you are giving a young person a criminal record that will be with them forever that will make it hard for them to get a job, he said.
Martin Luther King owned a gun.
Dear Gov: Explain to me why they use a knife intstead of a gun for an abortion. Surely a gun would be faster.
Hey Cuomo, go f@$% yourself, your Marxist/Leninist, fascist, liberal, leftist prick.
Leave it to libs to make guns a racial issue while ignoring the real problem within the black community which is family. How many blacks are born out of wedlock now? Oh that’s right, only 72% and recently I heard it was even as high as 85%. Yes only 85%. No problems will arise from that, it’s all the guns fault.
Well, nice try cuomonist, too bad all the brutha’s are too busy shooting each other illegally anyway to give two damns about your dictatorship laws that hurt the law abiding and unprotected innocent, especially in the ghetto. I’d like to see how far he’d venture into the South Bronx without bodyguards or police protection. Not a chance. Another hypocritical, girly-man liberal. Wake up, America, before it’s too late......
"Man Who Set Woman on Fire in Elevator Pleads Guilty Jerome Isaac, 48, will be sentenced to 50 years to life for killing 73-year-old Delores Gillespie last December.
The man who murdered 73-year-old Delores Gillespie by dousing her in gasoline and then setting her on fire inside her Prospect Heights apartment building's elevator pled guity to multiple charges and will be sentenced to 50 years to life in prison, District Attorney Charles Hynes announced Wednesday.
Jerome Isaac, 48, pled guilty to a first-degree murder charge for acting in an especially cruel and wanton manner and intentionally causing death while inflicting great physical pain, according to the Brooklyn DA.
GUN LAWS WORK!
BTW about that post: If you’ll notice he is inside the elevator with the doors closed. That means for quite a bit of time he was dousing her with gasoline and she couldn’t do anything. Why? Because she was not ARMED! Let a lib stand in her place and tell me if they are still for gun control.
Good luck, New Yorkers! Your governor is a mad man.
Takling guns away from blacks is a good move, I am glad Sharpton approves.
Go door to door in Harlem and clean them out.Tell them Sharpton sent me.
This arrogant asshole Cuomo is up to his eyeballs in the mortgage issues of a few years ago what with his involvement in the CRA when HUD Secretary under the reprobate Clinton. Nobody wants to bring that up now though.
People wonder why NY state is losing population. Well, it’s because of idiocy like the gun law which was just passed.
I moved from NY five years ago because of the taxes and regulations. That fact that he was elected by the idiots of that state validate my decision.
A lot of original gun control laws, after reconstruction, were in place to keep guns out of the hands of blacks. Liberals are ignorant of this fact.
Here's a few side notes about MLK concerning Cuomo's politicization of him.
I've found several links which help to substantiate the idea that MLK owned a gun. I hope that this one is okay to post here.
MLKs Arsenal & The Racist Roots of Gun Control in the U.S.
Also, I also found it intresting that Dr. Alveda King, MLK's niece, claims that MLK, and other family members, were Republican.
Dr Alveda King, MLK Was A Republican.mp4
So is it possible that Cuomo doesn't know what he's takling about concerning MLK?
According to a USDOJ report from 2011 analyzing homicide trends from 1980 - 2008, young black males (under 25 yrs), representing just one percent of the population, were responsible for 27 percent of the homicides with firearms. Quite a sobering statistic.
During the Clinton administration, Cuomo was head of HUD. I remember reading that The Secretary of Housing and Urban Development’s bodyguard lost his weapon. HUD needs an armed bodyguard? Hypocritical sods.
So these are illegal guns, which means it is against the law to have them. So that law is not doing you any good. Only an idiot would think passing another law is the answer.
I read somewhere that King was a Republican, but Kennedy was the one who got him out of jail, so he became a Democrat.
Has Al taken a moment to explain to Cuomo the fact that gun control was first introduced to keep Blacks from defending themselves?
