The Acton Institute ^ | January 22, 2013 | Joe Carter

At most inaugural events the sartorial buzz is about what designer dress the First Lady is wearing. But yesterday everyone was more interested in a Supreme Court Justice’s hat. Many people were left wondering: Why is Antonin Scalia wearing a renaissance era painter’s hat?

Would that we had someone of Scalia’s caliber who was not limited to silent protests by his position on the highest court in the land. Perhaps Scalia could take on a protege, like maybe Marco Rubio, and guide his thinking and encourage him to lead in a way that will protect the ideals that this country was founded on.

You have accurately described the 3 branches of the FEDERAL government. The constitution describes the 3 branches of STATES and the FED GOV. We had best start to reassert those other oft unmentioned ones or only the fed gov will have any meaningful power.

I meant to say that the constitution describes the 3 branches of goivernment within our Federalist system as WE the PEOPLE, the STATES and the FED GOV. We had best begin to reassert the oft unmentioned other two or only the FED GOV will have any meaningful power.

“why are the two other branches quiet and not doing something about it?”

I heard Pete Sessions respond to that question yesterday:
He said Congress wanted to address all the unconstitutional executive orders but know that Reid won’t give the issues the time of day in the Senate.

I say to Congress: DO YOUR JOB! Otherwise, you are in agreement with your silence!

I’m not much on the martyr mindset.

[Wiking Odhinn’s Hund Von Der Wilde Jagd and Wiking’s Cold Wind to Vahalla agree]

“Brothers will fight
and kill each other,
siblings do incest;
men will know misery,
adulteries be multiplied,
an axe-age, a sword-age,
shields will be cloven,
a wind-age, a wolf-age,
before the world’s ruin.”

It’s Ragnarök and röll time.

Yes.

And political correctness has truly become tyranny with manners.

He is not touched because he is of the untouchable, protected class.

William Roper: So, now you give the Devil the benefit of law!

Sir Thomas More: Yes! What would you do? Cut a great road through the law to get after the Devil?

William Roper: Yes, I'd cut down every law in England to do that!

Sir Thomas More: Oh? And when the last law was down, and the Devil turned 'round on you, where would you hide, Roper, the laws all being flat? This country is planted thick with laws, from coast to coast, Man's laws, not God's! And if you cut them down, and you're just the man to do it, do you really think you could stand upright in the winds that would blow then? Yes, I'd give the Devil benefit of law, for my own safety's sake!

St. Thomas More’s final words, “I am the King’s good servant, but God’s first.”

I think that message rings loud and clear especially for a Catholic Christian Justice of the US Supreme Court. And while Mr. Justice Thomas doesn’t get his due, he is probably my favorite Justice of the Supreme Court: a real Constitutional originalist.

It's a visual cliche of a renaissance artist, in part deriving from Rembrandt's self portrait

Honestly, though, it's just a generic renaissance hat. You can find tons of portraits from that period where they're wearing pretty much that hat.

I have long held that to be one of the most biting insults in all of English Literature.

There are three branches of government: Executive, Judicial and Legislative.

Check here to see why that is wrong.

Oklahoma State Senator explains the real three branches of government. The first branch is The People.
