Yep, that's what I was thinking of.
I would imagine a lot of things could be done pre- and post-production to clean up or completely change an instrument or voice. Heck, I could probably be cleaned up enough pre- and post-production to make it sound like I can actually sing (when in reality I sound like a train wreck when trying to sing).

Whitney Houston lip-synced hers’ at the Super Bowl, but nobody seemed to care about it back then.
Best version was, for those who remember it, was Tom Sullivan’s at SB X.
