Get ready for scan-and-frisk.
The NYPD will soon deploy new technology allowing police to detect guns carried by criminals without using the typical pat-down procedure, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said Wednesday.
The department just received a machine that reads terahertz the natural energy emitted by people and inanimate objects and allows police to view concealed weapons from a distance.
If something is obstructing the flow of that radiation, for example a weapon, the device will highlight that object, Kelly said.
A video image aired at a Police Foundation breakfast Wednesday showed an officer, clad in a New York Jets jersey and jeans, with the shape of a hidden gun clearly visible under his clothing when viewed through the device.
The department will begin testing the high-tech device for use on the street. The device is small enough to be placed in a police vehicle or stationed at a street corner where gunplay has occurred in the past.
Kelly, who first discussed the possibility of using this technology last year, said the NYPD has been working with the London Metropolitan Police and a contractor to develop a tool that meets our requirements. We took delivery of it last week, Kelly said at the gathering at the Waldorf Astoria. One of our requirements was that the technology must be portable ... We still have a number of trials to run before we can determine how best to deploy this technology. Were also talking to our legal staff about this. But were very pleased with the progress weve made over the past year.
The New York Civil Liberties Union last year raised concerns about virtual pat downs, and some security experts have said false positives could lead to unjustified stops.
So much for the 4th Amendment.
This country is so screwed.
At least I had a boyhood back when this was America. I can’t imagine growing up now.
I don’t see a problem with this.
Just as long as they have a warrant, based on testimony from my accuser describing the weapon and given under oath or affirmation under penalty of perjury.
Of course, if they have that, I won’t object to a physical search anyway. So they can refund the taxpayer money they spent on this high-tech gadgetry, and everyone goes home a winner.
Yes, except in our case it is worse. In that movie, all the people who walked by knew they were walking into a secure area and would be scanned. This scanner was bought to hide in a van and to drive around randomly scanning people who don’t know they are being scanned.
Not only proving to one and all that they've NOT necessarily been paranoid all this time, but NOW their fashion statements can also F with the fascist lackeys of NYC !
Which in New York, is now including most all of them. These things can probably ping a house, too.
Big Brotherly Love Ping.
The whole country is moving in the opposite direction, of allowing ordinary citizens to carry concealed, and the courts are backing that view up pretty well so far. So, why waste millions and millions of taxpayer dollars on a machine that will detect something that is sure to be completely legal in NYC within a few years?

You’ve got a point there. I retract that good idea thing.
I have an idea; “step right up, get yer terahert blaster! Guaranteed to overload or blind any terahert sensor “
I see someone making dummy pieces of metal or some other substance that would appear as a weapon on this scanner. Can just see everyone start carrying it with them hoping to hit the law suit jackpot.
everyone walk around with a ball of tin foil in their pockets Or an altoid mint can that should keep them busy.
sounds like chainmail shirts are coming back into fashion
I wonder how long it will take John Roberts to rule in favor of this new gadget.

Forty five years ago Emanuel Cellar (who with Thomas J Dodd called for gun registration) said he wanted a metal detector designed so police could could drive down a street and “zap” a people from a distance and find out if they are wearing a firearm.
