Ted Cruz shoots down Feinstein gun ban: 'Real assault weapon' are already illegal

As Senate Democrats unveiled an “assault weapons ban” encompassing a variety of rifles, shotguns, and pistols, the newest lawyer in the U.S. Senate pointed out that “real assault weapons” have been illegal since 1934.

“Washington politicians shouldn’t be taking advantage of recent tragedy to try to push an aggressive gun control agenda,” said Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, in a statement today. “Real assault weapons—machine guns—are already functionally illegal, and they have been since 1934. This proposal would have done nothing to prevent the terrible murders in Newtown, but it would limit the constitutional liberties of law-abiding citizens.”

Through the National Firearms Act of 1934, Congress imposed “a tax on the making and transfer of machine guns and certain other weapons, as well as a special occupational tax on persons and entities engaged in the business of importing, manufacturing and dealing in those weapons,” according to the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence. The tax was $200 (in 1934, the U.S. dollar was valuable enough that 200 bucks was a lot of money). Congress passed a ban on machine gun ownership in 1986.

Cruz was responding to Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., who proposed a new assault weapons ban today. “Getting this bill signed into law will be an uphill battle, and I recognize that—but it’s a battle worth having,” Feinstein said in a statement today. “We must balance the desire of a few to own military-style assaults weapons with the growing threat to lives across America. If 20 dead children in Newtown wasn’t a wakeup call that these weapons of war don’t belong on our streets, I don’t know what is.”

Feinstein’s bill is co-sponsored by several top Democrats, including Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., who went back and forth with Cruz about gun control on Sunday’s Meet the Press.

“The bottom line is that during the 10 years that the Assault Weapons Ban was in effect, the use of those weapons in crimes went down a significant percentage,” Schumer said.

Cruz countered by noting that the use of those weapons for crimes has continued to drop without a gun ban. “The Assault Weapons Ban was one of the least successful bills that has ever been put in place,” he told NBC’s David Gregory. “And in fact, when the ban expired, there were roughly 700 murders using all rifles. Today, there are roughly 300. There’s less than half. This is not designed to actually solve the problem of violent crime. This is designed to assuage liberal partisans who want to push their agenda forward.”

Glad to call him my senator. Voted for him in the primary and in the hard-fought runoff against the RINO Dewhurst.

You can’t tell the gun-grabbers anything. They revel in their ignorance and are proud of it.

The term “assault rifle” was coined in WW2 by the German General Staff to interest Hitler in a new rifle. Apparently the gun-grabbers operate at the same childish mental level as Hitler. (A liberal newspaper editorial said comparing gun-grabbers to Hilter was “hurting gun-owners’ cause. I disagree)

“If 20 dead children in Newtown wasn’t a wakeup call that these weapons of war don’t belong on our streets, I don’t know what is.”

Dear Senator Feinstein,

Aside from the fact that using the 20 dead children is merely an emotional argument, not a logical one, you need to be aware of something. Soldiers do not go to war with semi-auto weapons like the ones you put on display today. Soldiers use automatic weapons.

Oh, by the way, it isn’t your place to tell me what I can and cannot use to defend my liberty.

Your’s Truly,

Another lie from this privileged fossil, delivered from atop a pile of children's bodies.

Congress passed a ban on machine gun ownership in 1986.
Why does even our side continue to get the facts wrong? Congress did NOT ban machine gun ownership in 1986. It only outlawed letting any newly manufactured machine guns to enter the registration. All it did was drive the prices of currently existing machine guns through the roof. It is still perfectly legal to sell or transfer currently registered machine guns, so long as they register it with a new stamp. Some states, however, do have acutal bans on them.

Hmmm... I wonder how many hundreds of thousands of AR variants alone are out there, never mind everything else on her stupid list.
And every day more and more are being sold.

We few, we happy few, we band of brothers...

The fact is, those 20 people were shot with a hand gun. Four hand guns were found at the crime scene, a shot gun was removed from the trunk of the car.

The MSM lied about what weapons were used, as are the democrats.

“Why does even our side continue to get the facts wrong”

I know it is so stinking aggravating to hear that fully autos are outlawed. When will they get this right. It only adds more confusion.

I keep saying that lawmakers that keep squeeling like a pig with their head caught in a gate about magazines that contain more than 10 rounds have never seen a full auto belt feed running.....

I do like Cruz though. I hope he does not turn out like Rubio.

NBC should be sued to remove that STUPID video from their website. That video was made about 24 hours after the shooting. The information is completely innacurate. NBC has other videos making corrections to the story.

I’ll bet I have seen this same innacurate video cited 20 times in the past 2 weeks.

I suppose what our side needs to say is that MGs have been regulated since 1934. I tell people "Look up the National Firearms Act of 1934".

I actually own a real assault rifle. It’s a Mauser Mod 98 and, unlike Bushmasters and semi automatic AKs, it was actually issued as a war rifle by a world power.

For what it’s worth the following was issued by the CT State Police on Jan. 18, 2013 in an attempt to clear up the confusion.

UPDATE: State Police Confirm Weapons Used in Newtown Shootings
Kyle Becker January 21, 2013 7:38 am

The Connecticut State Police released a statement on January 18th attempting to clarify the confusion generated by the inconsistent and irresponsible media reporting following the Sandy Hook elementary shooting in Newtown on December 14th.

The released list of weapons sets the record straight on an issue that has driven the blogosphere to increasingly speculative lengths: exactly which weapons were used in the shooting?

The weapons seized from the attacker Adam Lanza are as follows, according to the State Police:

#1. Bushmaster .223 caliber– model XM15-E2S rifle with high capacity 30 round clips

#2. Glock 10 mm handgun

#3. Sig-Sauer P226 9mm handgun

Seized from suspect’s car in parking lot:

#4. Izhmash Canta-12 12 gauge Shotgun (seized from car in parking lot)

end snip

From the CT State Police website is the statement in it’s entirety.

I like Cruz......

But does anyone here realize you CAN buy and OWN a machine gun...if you are willing to have an anal exam...and pay a LOT of money?

I've shot machine guns legally as an AMERICAN CITIZEN....

In fact I can drive 35 miles from where I live and rent some FULLY AUTO guns...and shoot them on a range.
