Carlsbad Republican's bill prohibiting abortion after rape, incest draws ire and ridicule

An abortion bill introduced in the state House of Representatives by a Carlsbad Republican caused a political uproar in New Mexico and got some national notoriety Thursday — though the bill’s sponsor says it’s all a misunderstanding.

Rep. Cathrynn Brown’s House Bill 206, as written, would subject a victim of rape or incest to possible felony prosecution for obtaining an abortion. It equated termination of a pregnancy in these situations with “tampering with evidence.”

Her bill says, “Tampering with evidence shall include procuring or facilitating an abortion, or compelling or coercing another to obtain an abortion, of a fetus that is the result of criminal sexual penetration or incest with the intent to destroy evidence of the crime.”

I look at it this way. As a husband and father, could I raise the child of the man who raped my wife?

No, I couldn't.

Would you find int in your heart to put the child up for adoption? Or would you rather just kill it before it's born?

But shouldn’t they pass this bill before finding out what’s in it?

I wish people would learn to read. The bill does not forbid abortion in cases of rape. It forbids aborting the fetus and destroying it when doing so means destroying evidence of the rape. As in not whether in happened but as in securing DNA to prove who the rapist is.

If he were my husband, it would not be his choice to make. I would take the morning-after pill. Why in the world would I even wait around for a couple of weeks to find out if I was pregnant after such a violation? Of course I wouldn’t. Good grief.

It wouldn't be up to me. I wasn't the one who got raped.

Good grief.

Good grief to you too. Life begins at conception.

Sounds like splitting hairs to me. Anyways, who cares? Republicans really need to drop this abortion/rape crap. For Chrissakes, just stop talking about it! It's nothing but a loser. This idiocy cost us two sure-thing Senate seats last year and at least one more in 2010. Let it go. Nobody's buying it.

Here’s the thing. Why am I pro-life? Why are you pro-life in most cases? I’m pro-life for one reason, probably the same reason you are. I’m pro-life because the child is a person. As a person, I believe that person has a right to life under the 5th and 14th Amendments to the Constitution. That doesn’t change in the hard cases. That baby never asked to be here, is innocent of all crimes, and the baby belongs as much to the mother, more to the mother, than to the piece of excrement that donated his sperm. He/she doesn’t deserve to die by being chopped to bits inside his/her mother’s womb in some dirty Planned Parenthood clinic.

On another forum I used to post on, there was a guy who was liberal on every issue out there except abortion. He at first supported abortion in the case of rape, but he looked at the logical inconsistency of his position, and he realized he was pro-life because of his belief that the unborn child is a person, and as the unborn child is a person, he/she has a right to life...even in the hard cases.

If abortion takes a human life, then it is murder and should be treated as such. The tragedy of rape doesn’t make it okay. Two wrongs don’t make a right. Why can’t people be nice?

Young woman now view the Republicans as the pro rape party. This is what Jindal was talking about when he called the Republicans the stupid party. As Karen Hughes said the next Republican that screws up a rape question should have their tounge torn out.

If true, then young women are idiots who have been fatally brainwashed by the Left. If speaking plain truth is 'stupid", then count me as one who appreciates "stupid". A few have made some stupid slips, but they are only leveraged because society has fallen into an immoral morass of a cesspool - all the righteousness in the world can't fight that.

Anyways, who cares?

If a politician doesn't care about the equal rights of the child, he most certainly isn't going to care much, if at all, about your rights.

These weren’t stupid slips. These were factually incorrect, misogynistic and incredibly destructive not just to their own campaigns but to the whole pro life movement. Akin was the worst. He had time to be a patriot drop out and give the seat over to someone who could have won but he and his gtasping family couldn’t let go.
