Udall, Bennet say they still want assault weapons ban (CO Waffling Senators)

DENVER — Colorado’s two Democratic senators are pushing back at a Denver Post story Thursday that reported they are waffling on supporting legislation to ban assault weapons due to political concerns.

In December, roughly a week after the Newtown shooting that killed 20 first-graders, Sen. Mark Udall and Sen. Michael Bennettold FOX31 Denver that they wanted to see a new ban on assault weapons.

“I’ve come to the conclusion that military style weapons really don’t have any place in our society,” Udall said. “We ought to reinstate the assault weapons ban that served us well for 10 years from 1994 to 2004.”

Bennet followed suit the same day with a statement of his own calling for a comprehensive approach.

“The shooters in Aurora and Newtown should not have had access to the guns or magazines they used,” Bennet’s statement read. “I believe a combination of improved access to mental health services, restrictions on certain weapons intended for the battlefield, and elimination of the gun show loophole are sensible steps that can reduce our children’s risk.”

On Thursday, a few hours after Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-CA, rolled out her revamped legislation to ban assault weapons, the Denver Post’s Allison Sherry tried to find out if Udall and Bennet were on board.

Both senators addressed the need to find a balance that also works for sportsmen and stopped well short of saying they will support the specific legislation, which would permanently outlaw more weapons than the 1994 ban, which, unlike the new proposal, had a sunset provision that took affect 10 years later.

Sherry termed the apparent change in position as “confounding”.

But both staffers for both Udall and Bennet insisted Friday that they are simply looking over the specific legislation introduced Thursday, and that, while they are indeed “uncommitted” on Feinstein’s bill, their position in favor of a general ban on assault weapons has not changed.

“First and foremost, Sen. Bennet’s concern is that we find solutions that will be effective,” said the senator’s spokesman, Adam Bozzi, on Friday. “He has already called for an assault weapons ban. He’s going to take a serious look at this specific bill, which was introduced yesterday — as he will with other bills when they are proposed — before he decides which he’ll support.

“His concern is that we find solutions that will be effective and he’ll look into data that demonstrates how this will help limit or stop these events.”

Udall’s office also responded to FOX31′s request for a clarification.

“Sen. Udall has clearly said that he believes an assault weapons ban should be considered as part of a comprehensive solution to reduce gun violence,” said Mike Saccone, the senator’s spokesman. “But details matter. He is thoughtfully reviewing the legislation introduced yesterday, which is different from the 1994 ban, to determine if it conforms to Colorado and the West’s heritage of safe, responsible gun ownership.”

Bennet and Udall have not been among the more outspoken lawmakers pushing for gun control following the Newtown shooting.

Colorado Rep. Ed Perlmutter, D-Golden, is co-sponsoring the House version of Feinstein’s assault weapons ban. Thursday, at the elaborate press conference to introduce the legislation, Perlmutter read a letter from the family members of seven victims of the Aurora theater shooting who want lawmakers to ban assault weapons.

Also, Rep. Diana DeGette, D-Denver, is sponsoring a ban on high-capacity magazines in the House.

But unlike those two lawmakers from safe Democratic districts, Udall and Bennet represent all of Colorado, a western state with a long tradition of gun ownership but also a state that is shifting left politically.

A survey released Monday from Project New America and pollster Chris Keating found that 61 percent of Coloradans support a ban on assault weapons, and that other gun control proposals have even higher support in the state.

they wanted to see a new ban on assault weapons...

Congress is NOT a place for legislaters to pass laws of WANT, it's a place for them to pass laws of NEED. And we do not need this.

Gee, I wonder why “61% of Coloradoans” are in favor taking guns from Coloradoans, then how come none of the gun grab bills have moved other then being mouthed by a couple of Dims in public? Seems to be that poll above is garbage and the Colorado pols know it.

I don't know that I buy these poll numbers. I'd like to see the internals.

The only poll that should matter to Udal and to Bennet is the election they face after they make whatever decision they choose regarding gun legislation.

I've written to both of them a couple of times to let them know this voter's stance.

I hope every other Colorado Freeper is doing the same.

Years ago in the early 1970s, the DENVER POST wanted to ban what they called “Saturday Night Specials”.

Any gun under $50.00, at that time, they considered a SNS.

The pistol they used to illustrate the article was a RUGER .22 auto pistol. I bought my first Ruger .22 auto for the princely price of $45.00 back then.

A new Winchester 30-30 was the same price.

In a related move, both senators have restricted their security teams from using any military style weapons, as they are inherently dangerous and might go off without warning...NOT.

My words to all of them are simple and concise: You First.

And as Diane’s legislation shows, they are fully intending on being more equal animals than us, by specifically exempting from the ban government employees.

This is the United States. We The People! And we need to END this culture of privilege that infects those who are supposed to serve us. You want to make asinine laws, you can start it by applying them to yourself first.

Talking points your welcome to use
GOD DENIERS AND CONGENITAL LIARS
DEMOCRATS WANT YOUR MONEY AND THEN YOUR GUNS

Conservatives and supporters of the 2nd amendment the Obama regime is using the 2nd amendment argument to blame gun owners for its inability to deal with the hundreds of gangland murders and shootings commited in areas under their solid control using illegally obtained firearms.

Obama’s solution to those inner city problems is to remove those rights provided by the constitution to have and bear arms from all US citizens.
None of those 23 so called “reforms” and unconstitutional efforts being edicted by who some call an emperor do not deal with the following issues briefly outlined below let alone insane shooters using stolen weapons. .

They won’t because instead of creating a uniformly democratic society where every citizen has an equal voice no matter what their race or ethnicity.

Obama’s policies have divided races and ethnic groups gerrymandering congressional districts where much of this criminal activity occurs. GOPES {goverment of the people (republican party) elites} see this issue as a 3rd rail because most of it is black on black or illegal vs illegal (Mexican) activity .

GOPES are also afraid to say that policy also increased racial tension which has resited in deaths. But again GOPES accept this because of the influence of mainline socialist media which would be accusing them of “racism” if they dare to question it.

The purpose of all this hype on guns is to keep the right and conservatives focused on what the Demo-Coms describe as issues through their propaganda arm known as the MSM (mainline socialist media) not on the problems created by the “Libs” on their road of good intentions or the socialist/fascists/communists successors to comtrol over todays Democrat party; Which is the cost ,waste, and corruption of his administration which had led to a 16 trillion dollar deficit.

Not one word will address or offer a solution about the hundreds of gangland murders and shootings too many by fatherless teens using illegaly obtained mostly handguns and revolvers .

Instead place the blame on the constitution using code words like “assault rifles” which are really single shot per trigger pull semi automatic rifles, used for small game hunting or target practice. That are legal in every state but made to look like their military counterpart..

They have been called AR’s since Viet Nam when a DOD decision made ARs which are really medium caliber (22.3) machine guns designed to wound not necessarilly kill when they are automatic and fire as many rounds that are in its magazine once the trigger is kept pulled position. .These replace quick kill larger 30 caliber semi automatic (single shot) M-1, Springfield rifles and carbines used during WWII and Korea and approved in most states for use in big game hunting.

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2977901/posts NY Post pix of shooter using handgun

Obama certainly can’t critique a system created by his ilk .Ignored in his 23 edicts is that when once caught, perps get set free with lenient sentencing from “liberal” judges or sob sister plea bargain prosecution (which Obama supports for when a Illinois state senator while introducing legislation to sentence any 15 year old as an adult. Obama voted “absent” with others on roll call vote. The sob sister defence continues to be promoted by the MSM,The New York Times CNN, NBC and,ABC. There’s certainly no criticism of “no snitch” mentality partcularly in areas where these shootings are rampant.

It would be nice at these rallys if conservatives would point these facts out to Obamas adoring public
