Thousands of demonstrators rallied Saturday in Washington to demand tougher gun control laws, many describing themselves as first-time capital marchers who've had enough of gun violence.
On a cold day, a vanguard led a blocks-long procession with a big blue banner, declaring "March on Washington for Gun Control: When we stand together, we stand a chance."
The demonstrators want reinstatement of the federal ban on the sale of military-style semi-automatic rifles such as the one used in the recent Newtown, Connecticut, school shooting that left 20 children and six adults dead, plus the gunman and his mother. The protestors also want a ban on the sale of high-capacity ammunition magazines and universal background checks.

U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan told an assembly of marchers, after they reached their rallying area midway between the White House and the Capitol, that Saturday's demonstration wasn't about the Second Amendment.
"This is about gun responsibility; this is about gun safety; this is about fewer dead Americans, fewer dead children," Duncan told the crowd.

A small counterdemonstration was held across the street from the gun control advocates' staging area near the Capitol. One gun rights advocate said he thinks people in schools should be armed -- a viewpoint he developed after the Newtown shooting.
"I could not figure out why government employees have armed guards, banks have armed guards to protect the money, but the government, for some reason, thought we don't need armed guards to protect our children," Dick Heller said. "Maybe they're less worthy. I don't know. I don't know what their thinking was. All I can't understand is why didn't they protect their children like the government protects itself?"

500,000 people, many of them young adults, marched on Washington yesterday against abortion.
That’s five hundred thousand - Yesterday- the commemoration of Roe V wade decision 40 years ago which has resulted in at least 55,000,000 - That’s fifty five million - deaths.
Did you hear about it, see it or read about it?
Muskets were made for killing people.
First, there are already more than 20,000 gun control laws actively on the books today and none of them prevented the Sandy Hook tragedy. Second, millions upon million of people in America own guns and 99.9999% of them have never and will never use them for anything other than hunting or self-defense.
So, lets lose the hysteria and analyze the facts - a PERSON murdered those children in Connecticut, NOT a hunk of steel. In Portland, a PERSON killed two people in the mall, NOT a hunk of steel! In Denver, a PERSON shot up the theater, NOT a hunk of steel!!
NONE of these facts will matter to the gun-grabbing nanny-staters, because they focus solely on the gun and nothing else. So, what happens if ALL guns are outlawed and forcibly collected by the feds? Someone bent on committing mass murder may turn to knives, hatchets, chainsaws or machetes. So, we outlaw those. The next person to commit a heinous crime may use a bat, poison, poison gas or a semi-tractor. And the one after that may use a car, a pen or pencil, a rock, his hands . . . . . . so when do we blame the PERSON and NOT the inanimate weapon!???
The fact remains that until the left understands that murdering humans by ANY means including their favorite method, abortion, human life will be valueless and more copycats will come out to exercise their demented mass murder of innocent people.
All of that said, it occurs to me that the gun-grabbers are from the leftist school of complete control. What that means is that if 1 person commits a gun crime then, under the leftist theory of the “collective” and “groupthink”, they believe that ALL gun owners will commit mass murder unless they eliminate guns (good luck with that!). So, the calls for more gun control by the left after these incidents is twofold - eliminate the “balance of power” the Founding Fathers so carefully wove into the Constitution and gain total control over the people.
Another part that affects all of this is the fact that laws, whether gun laws, robbery laws, or whatever, are written solely to affect law-abiding citizens. People who commit crimes are called “outlaws” and criminals because they DON’T adhere to the laws created to control or stop their illegal activities.
So, should the left create additional gun control laws, will it prevent the next gun-related crime? Of course not. Laws only affect those of us who obey them. Those who disregard the law won’t be stopped from committing whatever crime they want to commit.
As a final note, Adam Lanza did not own the guns he used to murder all of the people at Sandy Hook Elementary. They were his mother’s guns and they were all legally purchased and registered. Which begs the question, what will any NEW gun control laws accomplish?
Yep, shorts in a blizzard. hee hee hee
It ain't a big crowd in DC if you can see daylight between 'em. My guess is they're maybe 995,000 shy of a "Million Moms". Less, if you include the media in the total.
It’s a damn good reason.
I go to local Tea Party gatherings. I vote in every election. I write and call my representatives. I’ve been a paid conservative columnist for the local daily, until my wife had to fear for her own job because of the least politically incorrect topics (never homosexuality, never race) I might address.
I don’t give a rip what country club Republicans do. They don’t influence me and don’t ask my advice either.
But I do not have time or money to head to D.C. or L.A. or Billings, Montana, to hold hands and march in parade.
Good on ya FRiend if you do. Wave at the camera if you get a chance. And let me know how things turn out.
It has been reported that no rifle was used in the Newtown school shooting, nor was any rifle carried into the building by the shooter.
Is this true?
I saw a photo of about a dozen people, although the text refered to “thousands” and “blocks long”.
Yeah, but we turned up in all the state capitols as well as D.C. on Jan. 19; (or was it the 20th?)so we actually had far more than they did! All they’re reporting seems to be in D.C.!
The nation is not reeling. What a hack writer.
This squeaky wheel of <1000 people will get more grease than the 500,000 people who marched for life.
The media is the problem. They have a strict socialist filter on what gets out.
I agree that these folks and anyone who voted for Obama should not be allowed to own guns.
It’s funny, I didn’t see CNN report on the march for life.
From the picture, my guess is that the march was in the hundreds at most.
If they had pictures of more numbers, they would show them.
I agree firebrand. Like Newt said the other day, let’s start the gun control hearings in Chicago where hundreds are shot to death every year by handguns, not assault rifles.
46K? Is that considered big bucks in DC now? Kinda outed themselves didn’t they? Our press is stupid in addition to being dishonest.
Dishonest? Treasonous Liars! Aiding and abetting the enemies of We the People and the Nation.
I agree that these folks and anyone who voted for Obama should not be allowed to own guns.
