Cory Booker, once firm on firearms, now gun-shy about weapons ban

Amid the contentious debate on America’s relationship with guns, and a full-court press by President Obama and Democrats in Congress to pass an assault weapons ban, the mayor of Newark, who hopes to be a U.S. senator come 2015, has staked out a decidedly centrist position on guns.

Booker called the issue "tiring" during a recent roundtable discussion on "Meet The Press," saying he would support an assault weapons ban but doubted it would do much to control violence in America.

A week later, Booker was not present when his longtime mentor New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg gave a speech on guns at the U.S. Conference of Mayors in Washington.

Earlier this month, New Jersey members of Mayors Against Illegal Guns gathered in Cranford for a rally. Booker, a longtime member of the group, was a no-show.

Booker’s stance on gun control is more moderate than Bloomberg’s, despite Newark recording roughly six times more murders per capita last year than New York — the vast majority due to guns.

So, he couldn't go to the left of any of his possible primary opponents?

All for a moderate show.

Carolyn McCarthy sees the truth.

" McCarthy suggested Booker may be playing politics with the issue. Since he is running for Senate, she said Booker "may be looking to capitalize on people living in very rural areas." "

Ok, lets add up the numbers...in New Jersey...ninety-five adults out of a hundred have a handgun in their possession? There’s probably 80k AR-15’s easily within the state? A one-hundred percent rate of gun ownership with union members in the state?

Those "very rural areas" being the 42 states in "flyover country" that are not against the 2A, like NJ, NY, CT, MA, MD, IL, CA and HI.

Gun control is a political third rail for ANY politician seeking the White House -- as Romney -- who signed the MA AWB -- confirmed last November. Both Chris Christie and Cory Booker saw this.

Booker is a shoo-in for Lautenberg’s US senate seat, even if Lautenberg hasn’t been told he’s leaving the job in 2014. That’s no matter WHAT Booker’s position might be on gun control. This is all about national politics, not New Jersey politics.

saying he would support an assault weapons ban but doubted it would do much to control violence in America.

So does he frequently support legislation that he knows in advance will 1) take freedoms away from people, and 2) be utterly useless in its intended function?

Sounds like a real winner. No wonder DC runs so smoothly, we keep sending people like him over there.

So why would he support it?

Cory Booker is a Democrat!

If he takes over Lautenberg's job in 2014, make no mistake, he'll vote with his party on this (or at least be out of town for the vote), but he's hoping that he doesn't have to. Taking a stand in favor of gun control will NOT be helpful in winning the 42 states that are 2A friendly. The 8 states + DC that are 2A unfriendly only have a total of 153 electoral votes, out of 538. One can argue that single-issue 2A voters were reluctant to come out and vote for Romney because he signed the MA AWB, while the "free stuff" Sandra Flukes came out in droves. A winning anti-gun candidate would still need 117 electoral votes from states that are 2A friendly. The math just isn't in their favor.

Zero's and Biden's recent statements about shotguns suggest that they must be getting different results from focus groups than the ones that they expected.

It’s about the presidency. That’s what he’s angling for with his “moderate” stance.
