If ‘Assault Weapons’ Are Bad…Why Does DHS Want to Buy 7,000 of Them for ‘Personal Defense’?

The Department of Homeland Security is seeking to acquire 7,000 5.56x45mm NATO “personal defense weapons” (PDW) — also known as “assault weapons” when owned by civilians. The solicitation, originally posted on June 7, 2012, comes to light as the Obama administration is calling for a ban on semi-automatic rifles and high capacity magazines.

Citing a General Service Administration (GSA) request for proposal (RFP), Steve McGough of RadioViceOnline.com reports that DHS is asking for the 7,000 “select-fire” firearms because they are “suitable for personal defense use in close quarters.” The term select-fire means the weapon can be both semi-automatic and automatic. Civilians are prohibited from obtaining these kinds of weapons

These are real assault rifles, since they all have selective fire and, hence, are illegal to sell to the civilian market. Notice also how they are deemed, "suitable for personal defense use in close quarters.” If so, then why aren't their semi-auto civilian brothers equally suitable for civilian personal defense in close quarters?

It wont happen but the vendor should refuse to sell them to the govt to protest the proposed ban on ARs.

Recall Bam during his first election talking of instituting a “National Police Force”. With all his political confidants running Homeland Security his wish has come true. Hence Homeland’s purchasing large caches of ammo and assault weapons.

“My sight is failing,” she said finally. “Even when I was young I could not have read what was written there. But it appears to me that that wall looks different. Are the Seven Commandments the same as they used to be, Benjamin?”

For once Benjamin consented to break his rule, and he read out to her what was written on the wall. There was nothing there now except a single Commandment. It ran:

ALL ANIMALS ARE EQUAL
BUT SOME ANIMALS ARE MORE EQUAL THAN OTHERS

After that it did not seem strange when next day the pigs who were supervising the work of the farm all carried whips in their trotters. It did not seem strange to learn that the pigs had bought themselves a wireless set, were arranging to install a telephone, and had taken out subscriptions to John Bull, TitBits, and the Daily Mirror. It did not seem strange when Napoleon was seen strolling in the farmhouse garden with a pipe in his mouth-no, not even when the pigs took Mr. Jones’s clothes out of the wardrobes and put them on, Napoleon himself appearing in a black coat, ratcatcher breeches, and leather leggings, while his favourite sow appeared in the watered silk dress which Mrs. Jones had been used to wear on Sundays.

Heh, wouldn’t matter much.

If they attack even a small village in Texas, they’ll be outgunned.

CW-II is coming...and the bat-eared-b*stard and his felon friends know it.

And the next attack will be met with a "small village in Texas" armed with these cool select fire toys bought for DHS.

Um... so that millions upon millions of govt-purchased hollow point bullets don't go to waste?

Define "assault weapon" .... assault "a threat or attempt to inflict offensive physical contact or bodily harm on a person (as by lifting a fist in a threatening manner) that puts the person in immediate danger of or in apprehension of such harm or contact".....can a pistol, knife, sling-shot, tennis racket etc. do all that on its own? The SUV ran over the boy....the article excoriated the actor......

Are they buying them or reserving them?

I think they are just trying to keep them off the market by setting them aside so the public cannot buy them. I suspect they did that with ammo.

As with Obomacare, the politicians are exempt from their own laws.

We need an amendment. Every law passed applies to those who pass them as well. Every state should put this up for a vote in their constitutions. If every state approves (which they probably would), the feds would be handicapped. few of their discriminatory laws would be valid in the states.

Forcing the law makers to actually be subject to their own laws would change history.

Actually if you are willing to be fingerprinted, have a complete criminal background check, pay $200 for a Class III stamp, purchase a gun safe and submit to unannounced ATF inspections you too for a minimum of $15,000 can purchase a full auto assault weapon. Who among us can afford it?

Not the ones that are the subject of the article. They're all selective fire, meaning they can be switched from semi-auto to full auto at the whim of the user. Since 1986 it's been illegal either to import or domestically manufacture such weapons for the civilian market; they can only be sold to governmental entities. The semi-autos are th ones sold to the civilian market. 9,000 is also a pretty small number to dry up production for the civilian market.

Memory is short. Do you remember the outcome of the federal assault on the Branch Davidians? (Waco Texas)

“I think they are just trying to keep them off the market by setting them aside so the public cannot buy them.”

They are select fire so the public cannot own them anyway. Besides, I dont think there are that many sitting on shelves waiting to be sold so they will have to be manufactured.

The full auto weapons you refer to are ones manufactured or imported before 1986; that’s why, even if legally qualified, you can’t buy a full auto for much less than $15,000. All those either imported or manufactured after 1986 are permanently off limits to the civilian market. Short supply plus high demand equals high prices.
