“Gomer Pyle, USMC” star Jim Nabors married his longtime male partner at Seattle’s Fairmont Olympic Hotel earlier this month, according to Hawaii News Now.
Nabors, a Hawaii resident, had never publicly come out. But his relationship with Stan Cadwallader wasn’t a secret before they decided to take advantage of Washington’s new same-sex marriage law, he told the news station.
“I’m 82, and he’s in his 60s, and so we’ve been together for 38 years, and I’m not ashamed of people knowing, it’s just that it was such a personal thing, I didn’t tell anybody,” Nabors he told the station.

Seriously, I thought Neighbors died of aids years ago.
I lived in a small town in the mid-80’s where Nabors played the local county fair. Long before anyone was out of the closet, but immediately everyone realized he was gay.
He was with this boyfriend (supposedly has been for nearly 40 yrs.). Surprisingly for a small church-going community they all seemed okay with Nabors. But the boyfriend was most likely the least popular person to ever set foot in town. Flamingly gay, and beyond that thoroughly obnoxious.

And I am ashamed to admit when I saw this headline, my first thought was that he had died 10 years ago. I had no idea he was still around.
I think a lot of people thought he was dead because we haven’t seen Gomer Pyle in reruns for nearly 20 years.
Supposedly due to a copyright dispute (the people who hold the copyrights on Nabors’ recordings tried to hold up the owners of the episodes for more money).
There are some Gomer Pyle episodes where, if you had to cut out all of Nabors’ singing, there’d be around six minutes of material left.

Gomer Pyle has been in continuous reruns for years. Used to be on here on Sunday mornings.
