Mother of VA Tech shooting survivor: NRA shouldn’t be part of gun safety debate
msnbc.com ^ | January 30, 2013 | Morgan Whitaker

The mother of one of the survivors of the Virginia Tech shooting told elected leaders to stand up to the NRA, a group she argues doesn’t even deserve to be “at the table” in the gun safety debate.

Lori Haas joined PoliticsNation Wednesday after attending the contentious Senate hearing which featured testimony from gun control advocates, gun rights supporters, and experts in law enforcement. NRA head Wayne LaPierre voiced some of the strongest opposition to new regulations, including shooting down a proposal to close the background check loophole.

“We are hopeful and impressed with some of our leadership on the hill but frankly we need leadership from all of our representatives,” Haas said. “It shouldn’t take much courage to stand up to the NRA. Courage is facing down the barrel of a gun, and my daughter did that and there were 16 other injured students at Virginia Tech who did that.”

“The NRA should not even be at the table,” she said. ”I don’t see reports from them, I don’t see studies from them, I don’t see activities from them, I don’t see policies from them that contribute to the public safety debate.”

Haas, who joined the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence as an organizer in her home state of Virginia in 2010, pushed back against those who think argue regulations like background checks attack legal gun owners in America. “I find it very, very telling that the commentary is always ‘you’re targeting law abiding citizens’,” she said. “No, we’re not targeting law abiding citizens, we’re targeting criminals, dangerous individuals, felons, domestic abusers, terrorists. We want to stop those individuals from getting a firearm and harming our neighbors, our friends, our communities.”

“We need to do a background check on all buyers on all gun sales.”

I believe these panels should only be made up of people who were in these shootings in these stupid-ass gun-free zones who wished they had an equivalent force weapon to defend themselves with.

Moms do not get to tear away people’s GOD GIVEN right to self-defense that the Constitution ACKNOWLEDGES and GUARANTEES TO UPHOLD.

I don’t care whose mom you are. I seriously don’t.

Who the hell does she think she is denying 1st Amendment rights to anyone???

They seem to know that in order to eliminate the 2nd amendment they have to restrict the 1st amendment.

Tublecane, my FRiend, the propaganda is so obvious I wonder how anyone can miss it, but I have to admit. The left is the master of the lie. They make distortion of the truth an art.

Too many Americans get their news from the state-run media. By that I don’t mean government directly controls the media. I mean the media and government are ideological bedfellows who see the news as a way to shape thought.

On behalf of all those killed by drunk drivers, I hope this asshat has completely disassociated herself with everything remotely connected to the spirits industry.

And since when has the NRA ever made money off of gun sales?

Can’t say the same thing for Planned Parenthood and abortion. Can’t say the same thing about the NEA. Can’t say the same thing about the NAARCP.

You’re absolutely right, S.A.M. If the left doesn’t like it, amend the constitution. Until then, I have nothing more to say to any of the gun grabbers. While I sympathize with the mom, she’s not the only parent of a victim. Even then, those parents aren’t more important than 300+ million other Americans. We have an equal say, and I say not another inch. If they don’t like it, start working on a constitutional amendment.

The sad part is that it is the left, that is handing out the mental booze and the keys.

To this Mother. My cousin was killed at age 18 by a drunk driver. Why haven’t they taken these people off the road?

Since the NRA represents many of the millions of gun owners in America and has done more to promote safe usage of guns then the Government has, this is a stupid statement on her part.

Sure lady. Terrosits go to the local Gander Mountain or Cabelas and buy their weapons and submit to a background check........
I am sorry for your loss but do not allow your grief to make you stupid...........

Morons like this mother of a VA Tech victim have nothing to contribute but their irrational fear. Fear and emotion have no place here, but the MSM keeps stoking the fire. Grrrr.

”I don’t see reports from them, I don’t see studies from them, [the NRA] I don’t see activities from them, I don’t see policies from them that contribute to the public safety debate.”

Then you’re willfully blind, because the NRA has produced numerous studies over the years as to gun safety, as have many other organizations. And, let’s just suppose the NRA handed you a nicely bound volume of their studies. Here, I will outghoul you. You’d pour red paint on it as a means of protesting its very existence.

Sorry for your loss mrs. Haas but, you can’t get where you want by shutting up, shouting down or making 50% of America non particpants in the discussions to stem violence.

You need our input. We have ideas, strategies and are willing partners in the effort to mitigate violence of all types.

Well, lady, victims and their families shouldn’t have a place at the table either then because you’re too emotionally damaged to make rational decisions.

Please note that this woman did not suffer any loss. Her daughter survived the shooting. In fact, the article doesn't say the daughter had any injuries.

A "survivor" probably means anyone who was on campus that day.

No sympathy is called for.

Correction: Her daughter was injured. But not killed.
