Geraldo contemplating run for Senate By Jonathan Easley - 01/31/13 02:02 PM ET

Television personality and radio host Geraldo Rivera announced Thursday he’s “truly contemplating” a run for Senate in New Jersey.

“I mention this only briefly, fasten your seatbelt,” Rivera said on his radio show. “I mentioned this only briefly to my wife ... but I am and I’ve been in touch with some people in the Republican Party in New Jersey. I am truly contemplating running for Senate against Frank Lautenberg or Cory Booker.”

New Jersey Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D), 89, is up for reelection in 2014 but hasn’t announced whether he plans to seek another term.

Newark Mayor Cory Booker (D) has announced he is weighing a bid for the seat, a decision that has frustrated New Jersey Democrats, many of whom feel he was their best shot at unseating Gov. Chris Christie (R).

“I’m not going to drill this out, because obviously I’ve got commitments to Fox and to here at the radio program and I’m really having a great time,” Rivera added. “But I figure at my age, if I’m going to do it I’ve got to do it. And there doesn’t seem to be any Republicans ready to work against or run against Corey Booker, the popular Newark mayor.”

Rivera could face a tough primary challenge, however, with reports suggesting that Assembly Minority Leader Jon Bramnick of Westfield, state Sen. Joe Kyrillos of Monmouth County and Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno are all weighing bids for the GOP ticket.

No official Republican contenders have emerged so far, and none have much of a national profile. New Jersey hasn’t elected a Republican senator since the 1970s.

The astonishing thing is with this race he is more than willing to once again dump on his ex-wives as you know all of his extramarital cr@p will be front and center. The man cares about nothing save his monstrous ego.

I’d be looking forward to the debates. Will there be chair fights?

IF the Republican Party takes Jerry Rivers as a viable candidate, I will change my voter registration as quickly as I can do so.

I have been a registered Republican voter for over 52 years.

That will end if they cater to that jerk. Especially after how they have treated Sarah Palin.

Really? Al didn’t say anything at our last sit-down...

This guy could be dangerous, folks. Rivera is Jesus to the Hispanic community. I could see his rise to presidency as the ‘Hispanic answer to black 0bama’ and that would SUCK BIG TIME. I know he’s Jewish but he’ll play up the Hispanic roots thing like never seen before.

New Jersey hasn’t elected a Republican senator since the 1970s.

They would have, if the state supreme court hadn't moved to install Lautenberg.

Owww! I just had an acid reflux accident. Managed to hold the puke from spewing all over my keyboard. Just what we need. Another radical left wing extremist demokkkrat to “work for the people”. By that I mean la raza and mecha. This guy is an idiot. My wife went to his show several years ago and like the good girl she is, she voiced an opinion opposite of his when called upon and he didn’t like it. Not one bit. Heheheheh!
