Trusting Your Own Government (or Not)
American Thinker ^ | 01/31/2013 | John Harvey

Posted on 01/31/2013 1:07:02 PM PST by SeekAndFind

Earlier this month, Geraldo Rivera asked a caller: "How could you not trust your own government?"

Putting aside big and little episodes of untrustworthy government in the history of this country like the Trail of Tears, the internment of Americans of Japanese descent, Kent State, Waco, Fast and Furious, and the Benghazi Coverup, Rivera implies the burden of proof lies with the skeptical citizen when it comes to trust. But his question only diverts our attention. The issue isn't the relative peace in the body politic at this instant. The question Geraldo asks really goes to the heart of the very nature of our government.

History is full of governments that ran sufficiently amok that they become a mortal danger to their own citizens. Such governments did not last. Indeed, the last century was so full of episodes of different governments murdering their own citizens by deliberate official policy that it spawned a new word: democide. Many in the media and academia who largely reject American Exceptionalism want us to believe instead that our government is exceptional in light of the history of governments.

In how easily they dismiss the Second Amendment as being obsolete, they are telling us that there are no circumstances whatsoever in which some future American government would ever turn feral. They are willing to stake the lives of their children and grandchildren on that assertion.

Certainly people want a trustworthy and competent government. But it concerns me that more than one member of the president's inner circle has publicly praised China's Mao, a man responsible for the brutal deaths of over 40 million Chinese citizens. I am shocked that a close advisor to the president has favorably quoted Mao's warning that [political] power comes from the barrel of a gun.

The financial industry became attuned to the concept of a “Black Swan” in the wake of the recent near-collapse of the financial system thanks to the now-famous book of that title by Nassim Nicholas Taleb.

The problem with respect to the RKBA and the Second Amendment is not that government is not generally trustworthy at this moment, it is the very fatal consequences when government runs amok, even thought there are supposed to be many checks and balances to prevent it.

While I don’t need to resort to the last line of defense of arms against a dangerous government, I cannot let that right be diminished lest any of my grandchildren need it after I am long gone.

It’s part of the religion of the left - the assumption of benevolence on the part of those enlightened enough to seek public office.

So it’s just a “weird” thing to them that you wouldn’t put your full faith and trust in them.

"How could you not trust your own government?"

Perhaps Geraldo has not noticed that the government does not trust government. The Constitution created the three branches of government with distrust in mind. Geraldo, what do you think is meant by the term, "checks and balances".

Loving one's country is patriotic, trusting one's government is just plain foolish.

The nine most terrifying words in the English language are, ‘I’m from the government and I’m here to help.’

We renamed the MUTE button on our remote as the GERALDO button. Works on most major brand remote controls.

I’ve just about worn my “Geraldo Button” out. It also doubles as an “Obama Button.”

Let me remind you, Whore All Dooo came to this party with CNN (Commie News Network).

He is an incurable MSM shill. Recently saw his anti-gun rant and he is still where he started. Prestitute of the first order serving the Globalist Leftist Cabal.

As opposed to Joe Biden’s: What America needs more of is a 3 letter word “J-O-B-S”. :)

Well, both he and Juan Williams work with FOX NEWS.

I guess that’s “Fair and Balanced”.

They are both daily disasters. The never win a position and serve as reference point to illustrate the inanity of the Left’s position. You left out the chuckel head Bob Beckle.

The warriors, the antagonists on the street for freedom and individualism rest with the Anarchist.

Sad to say, but if provided with a clear message that should resonate among their disparate mass. It’s the anarchist crowd that will champion the overthrow of Gov’t in our lives.

If they can come to realize the difference between Socialism/Fascism and liberty as expressed in the Constitution, they are our front line. The extreme, violent at times, but energy that is directed at gov’t.

Currently this group has no message or position. The development of a position, something they can rally behind, needs to be centered on the individual.

I suggest we, as constitutionalists, folks that cherish the individual, leverage the time and energy to refocus a group of radicals to our cause.

The simple answer (I guess to simple for Geraldo) is that you are not supposed to ever trust the government. Never, ever trust anyone with access to that much power. They will abuse it eventually. We must always have oversight on everything the government does. That's why the power wielded by the Executive agencies are unconstitutional.

And Geraldo has legal training? (I will not call him a "lawyer".

It is incumbent upon us as citizens to not trust government.

It is both our duty and sacred trust.
