Ex-coaches: Rooney Rule is broken

NEW ORLEANS -- Three black former NFL coaches say the league needs to rethink its Rooney Rule for promoting minority hiring after 15 top vacancies -- eight head coaching jobs and seven general manager positions -- were all filled by white candidates since the regular season ended a month ago.

"I know the concept is good and something we need to do," said Tony Dungy, who was with the Indianapolis Colts during the 2006 season when he became the first black coach to win a Super Bowl. "Obviously, it's not working the way it should."

The Rooney Rule, implemented in 2003, was named for Pittsburgh Steelers chairman Dan Rooney, who steadfastly pushed the league to require every team to interview at least one minority candidate every time there is a coaching or general manager opening.

Before the rule went into effect, the NFL had only six minority coaches in more than 80 years. Since it has been in place, 12 have been hired.

But none were hired this year to replace the two black coaches who were fired -- Romeo Crennel in Kansas City and Lovie Smith in Chicago -- and the one fired black GM, Rod Graves in Arizona.

Over a half-century after Brown v. Board of Education and we still have to contend with affirmative action?

Enough is enough! The playing field has been level for several decades, IMHO.

I think we need a law mandating 50% Caucasians for all NFL and NBA teams.

Only the crummy Steelers, who are big Obambi supporters, would even think of this insane rule. I'm glad the coaches are going for content of character rather than color of skin.

Can't think of any NFL team that wouldn't hire a knock-down tough nosed "colored" coach if available, so the ruling is stupid.

I'm told that the coaches will interview a "black" coach FIRST, then go ahead and hire the best man.

Whites are the minority in the NFL and the AFL. Patently obvious if you watch any of the games over a period of time.

Amen to that!

I’m rapidly losing my mind because of all the discussions of race.

It NEVER ends.

The Rooney Rule is absolutely insane...and you have to be if you think it's a good idea. It defies logic. LOGIC: NFL teams are in business to MAKE MONEY. The people they put in charge are the ones they think will WIN and thus...make them money. It is a business decision and people don't make the kind of money you have to have made to buy an NFL team by being stupid.

That means if they think a man with pink hair and purple skin will win a super bowl...they will hire a pink haired, purple skinned man. PERIOD. It is a BAD business decision to hire someone based on their skin color...whether it is a white guy...or a black guy.

The playing field is “overrepresented” The front office is properly “represented” Some areas whites and Asians do better, accept it. You can’t have it both way.

If you want to bitch about quotas, take it to the Dems in the US Senate . . .

That’s a good start, but we should do more than that. When white players make a free throw, it should be marked down as two points. When they make a layup, it should be three points. Slow white players have dreams just like everyone else. The NBA would be a fairer and more equal workplace.

It would be like black students getting preferences when applying to law school.

Could it be that Crennel, Smith, and Graves were perceived to be that bad at the end of their jobs?

Whites represent 75% of the nation’s population but only 5% of the NBA’s rosters.Do whites deserve “affirmative action” or should they be working harder at their three points shots?

So Tony, please tell us how it should work.

Should we designate that certain teams are mandated to have black head coaches? Should we set a quota that there need to be a minimum of x teams with black head coaches? Is a black offensive coordinator worth half a black head coach for your scoring purposes?

Crennel has sucked everywhere he has coached. Why KC hired him in the first place is a mystery to me.

Affirmative action is a government admission that blacks, Hispanics, and women are genetically inferior to white and Asian men; 5,000 years of preferential treatment won’t change that.

Government speaks with forked tongue...

It must be great to be a black coach candidate knowing the reason you are being interviewed is to provide cover for management.

Apply it to QB position-—Oakland should be required to hire back JeMarcus Russell and start him over Carson Palmer.
Its only fair, right? Results be damned its the thought and equalizing choices that matter.

“Whites are the minority in the NFL and the AFL”

Yup. These liberals and their liberal white guilt. My Filipino bud told me something that made sense when he just said “white liberals are the most racist people” he’s met as they are the ones who don’t hang out with non-white races, and we’re in L.A.

In the NFL if you don’t win you’re butt is gone ... whether a coach or player ... black, white, somewhere in between ... it’s about winning. NFL is short for ‘Not For Long’.
