For up to $250 a pop, Essex County officials aim to curb violence with gun buyback program

The number of firearms turned in for the state-sponsored gun buyback programs held recently in Camden and Trenton broke records.

In fact, they almost broke the bank.

But state Attorney General Jeffrey Chiesa promised that the cash-for-guns program announced today for Essex County would turn away no one empty handed.

"This time I plan to have enough cash," he said.

Joined by Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn Murray, Chiesa today touted the success of the Camden and Mercer County gun amnesty programs and announced that Essex County's program will be held in five towns in mid-February.

So far about $550,000 in forfeiture funds have been spent in the previous two buybacks, Chiesa said. Those who were given IOUs at the Mercer County buyback will be able to redeem their vouchers at the prosecutor's office Friday.

Flanked by top law enforcement brass and community leaders from the hosting municipalities, Chiesa touted the program's success at a press conference at the Essex County Prosecutor's Office, despite some naysayers questioning its effectiveness. Noticeably absent was Newark Police Director Samuel DeMaio. A spokeswoman for the prosecutor's office said he was not scheduled to attend.

Here’s a notion:

What if a private organization with an official sounding name like “the Springfield Coalition to reduce Gun Violence” or “The Green County Sheriff’s Support Squad” and a careful firearms dealer advertised and held a “gun buyback” offering “up to $1000” for firearms, “no questions asked.”

Then, photograph everyone, ask for photocopies of their drivers licenses, note serial numbers, and offer them a trade-in price for their guns.

You might not cut many deals, but you’d scare the crap out of criminals, and undercut the attractiveness of these events, especially if they became common.

The left does fake political theater crap like this all the time. Why can’t we?

Get some cash and intercept buyers. You know you can turn it over anytime you want. Nobody here is stupid enough to sell at those prices. I guess that’s why we didn’t vote for Odouchema.

Any trustworthy stats on how/if these gun buyback programs actually reduce gun violence? Or do the “media” use any down-turn in crime, even crimes that would not normally be committed without a gun (like, say, a burglary or a domestic “dispute”/fight), as “proof” that buyback programs work?

This is horrible news; those of us along the frontier of the Newark Welfare Reservation/Food Desert are now going to have the raiding parties looking for guns to sell (in addition to the jewelry and GPS units they’ve been pillaging).

Guns play too important a role in the drug trade for these programs to have any real impact; these programs weren’t even necessary in NJ until they stopped the police from intercepting the drugs and guns on the NJ Turnpike. Rather than risk their livelihoods and pensions, the police stood down; black-on-black violence has never been worse ever since. Pyhrric victory...

People should go out and pick up a bunch of Hi-Point C9s for $150-175 and make some money at the next buy back.

Capitalism hoo rah!

Go to a sporting goods store and buy out all their $150 shotguns and them take them to the sale and get $250 each for them. Then take the profit and buy an AR-15.

How is the funding for this stupidity being done? Is the taxpayer getting the shaft or is it from private donations? Does anyone know?

Gun buybacks are boob bait for bubbas and accomplish nothing. They're also great ways to dispose of stolen property and guns used in crimes (including murders). Typically, none of these cities run the serial numbers to return stolen property or find crime guns and no records are kept of the sellers. What a great idea! Organized crime at its best under the guise of law.

I’d like to see a statistical breakdown of all the weapons turned in at the last buyback and now.

Break them down into many categories such as
*rifles
* handguns
* shotguns
* machine guns
* general military assault weapons
* automatic handguns (i.e. Tec 9, Mac10, etc)

Then subdivide them as
* Antiques
* Inoperable
* Illegal - Id no. scratched out, etc.
* Traced as used in a crime
* Types of guns, revolvers, pistols, etc.
* Types of rifles, single shot, ramrod load, clip fed, hand fed (22. cal., AK 47, SKS, .30 cal. 303 Springfield, Enfields, M-1, M-2, M-14, AR 15, M 16, etc.

AND:

* Those that were “taken off the street” as opposed to taken “out of the house”.

Once you see the figures, you’ll shit. Buybacks are largely a feel-good fraud on the public.
