Chris Kyle, a former Navy SEAL who was the U.S. military’s deadliest sharpshooter and wrote the best-selling book American Sniper, was fatally shot Saturday in a double slaying at an Erath County gun range, the U.S. Marshals Service said. Late Saturday, Lancaster police said they had arrested a man they say matched the description of a gunman wanted in the slayings.

After a brief chase, officers arrested 25-year-old Eddie Ray Routh, said Lt. Kelly Hooten, a department spokesman. Kyle was at a charity event at the gun range at Rough Creek Lodge and Resort on behalf of his Dallas-based security firm Craft International, said Hudson Hartson, a childhood friend of Kyle’s. Craft International often hosted law-enforcement training events at the location, which is near Glen Rose, about 50 miles southwest of Fort Worth. Investigators said that Routh, a former Marine who sources said is believed to suffer from post-traumatic stress syndrome, shot Kyle and the second victim at point-blank range.

No information was available on the second victim late Saturday. Erath County officials had issued an alert for authorities to be on the lookout for the gunman, who was believed to be armed and dangerous and driving a black Ford F-350 truck with large tires and rims. The suspect was believed to be highly trained with military experience.

Actually, after WWII, the press put out lots of horror stories about returning veterans “who have been trained to rape and kill”. Seriously. The truth was that the vast majority had years of ‘chaste’ stored up.

In any event, the veterans as a group had some huge priorities. First they wanted a college education and a good job. Then somewhere in there they wanted to get married and have kids. The war was over, and there was no time to fret about being a civilian again.

At the time, a lot of universities were still gender segregated, and all mixed gender activities had to have a faculty chaperone. In many places students could not even own a car or live off campus.

The response of the veterans to this was “Hell no!”, and they changed these schools overnight, being particularly persuasive individuals.

(I heard one account of a Dean of Women at a prominent college, who was horrified at the prospect of veterans “raping” her “ladies”, who in truth were as desperate as the veterans to do “a little raping” themselves. Or maybe a whole lot of raping, and marriage, and kids.)

In any event, for years thereafter there was the occasional story of some veteran who went nuts, though I might add, at a statistically *lower* frequency than civilians as a whole.

Odd number of notable gun people starting to end up dead under odd circumstances.

For an honorable mention to that list, Massad Ayoob survived a fluke helicopter crash last week.

My FIL was at the Hurtgen Forest; my father was a WWII Marine in the Pacific; I was a VN Marine up on the DMZ.
Between the three of us, we knew PTSD.

Didn’t Eleanor Roosevelt write a magazine article calling for returning vets to be placed on an island in the pacific for six months or so before coming home, so as to be able to assimilate back into society? She felt that the brutality of the war and what they had experienced made it unsafe for them to return too soon after the fighting ended.

Ok, I am not one to buy into conspiracy theories, but this just stinks to high heaven. I am getting real worried about the many so called coincidentally timed shootings around America as of late.

I cannot be the only one who has been keeping my guns cleaned, ready and my powder dry.

RIP. Horrible to lose someone like this.

It’s not a conspiracy though. Everything that goes wrong nowadays does not equal conspiracy. There is evil in the world.
