FILTH AND FURY: Homeless return to debase Grand Central Terminal (Bloomberg's NYC)
NY Post ^ | 2/3/13 | MICHAEL GARTLAND

In celebration of its 100th birthday, the bad old days have returned to Grand Central Terminal.

Droves of homeless people are flooding the landmark again — even as workers prepared for last week’s centennial celebration.

On a windy Wednesday, The Post spotted at least 40 hobos in search of free eats and a warm place to flop.

“It’s nauseating,” said Yvette Molina, a Tarrytown resident, who was lunching in the concourse. “It’s really disgusting. It makes you lose your appetite.”

In scenes reminiscent of the 1980s, one man picked through the garbage, rewarding himself with a half-eaten slice of pizza and a bag of nuts. A woman snored loudly as she slept, sitting upright on a concourse bench. And another man hoisted an oil can of Foster’s lager with filth-encrusted fingers.

The sights and smells — the stench of body odor easily overwhelmed the appetizing aromas from Magnolia Bakery — are enough to rattle the senses of even the most seasoned travelers and workers.

“Every day you see new homeless. Sometimes they smell — a bad smell,” said Hafiza Supti, who works at a Hudson News stand. “I have to move from one place to the other place.”

“Some of my buddies and I are having a rough go of it. What say we come stay at your place a while. Shouldn’t be too terribly long.”

Sure... Come on over. You could use the motor home too. It sleeps six.

Give the address, baby.

Or is your charity, like your money, your great looks, your motorhome and your GOD just more dribblin’ b.s. running out of your mouth?

It is a case of the poor and the filthy not wanting the help that is available.

True,...

Isn’t it a damn shame we have to tolerate folks that are so less unfortunate than ourselves? /s

Isn’t it a damn shame we have to tolerate senility and its accompanying nonsense as part of the human condition?

Some things are preventable; some are not.

Not BS, but tongue in cheek. However, the wife and I have taken homeless people into our home from time to time. They have always been families though... Never a problem, they are not all crazy and even the crazy ones are mostly harmless.

babygene, with all due respect, I don’t think you are familiar with the types of homeless that inhabit Grand Central and the NYC subway system. And I strongly doubt you would invite even one of them into your home. It would be putting yourself, your wife and family in danger.

They are truly the wretched of the earth. You look at them and wonder what their story is, how did they get there. If we knew the answer it would most likely involve drugs and excessive use of alcohol. It’s very sad. But for them, certainly most of them, there is no going back to a ‘normal’ life. Their minds and any pride they may once have had is gone. They will die in the subway tunnels or on the street grates, and be buried in a Potter’s Field.

You know, I have been through there dozens of times while visiting my brother. (he lives 50 miles north of the city)

Your right, some of them are pretty scary. And your right, I wouldn’t invite some of them (probably most of them) into my home.

However, I wasn’t kidding when I addressed that other Freeper. I am rich by most standards, and good looking (for my age) and educated. I have been very fortunate in life.

It hasn’t always been that way... My family didn’t have electricity until I was eleven or twelve, and indoor plumbing until I was out of the home at seventeen. (I’m 66)

My apologies.

I really did not catch your wit, and I should have dug a little deeper.

The holier-than-thou types who feel oh-so-sorry about the homeless while riding in their limos to the network set (why do Chris Matthews and Mika Brzezinski come suddenly to mind?) were the ones I was lashing out at.

Thanks for setting me straight and, again, my apologies.

I thought that most of the homeless are either drug addicted or mentally ill...some have lost their jobs and cannot afford to feed their families...There is a story behind every face. I am not Jesus and I cannot discern the innermost parts of people and if the day comes that I have to distinguish between the “deserving” poor and those who do not deserve..my Christian life will be for naught. Thankfully, I have contact with an amazing God who leads me to those who he wants me to help and I am not about to make them fill out a form to see if they deserve the money or time I have to give. The homeless man I referred to in my original post is now one of the choir directors for the Brooklyn Tabernacle...a man with talent who just needed a helping hand out of the box he was living in. The scripture you quoted..if you read it in context is NOT talking about the poor...but it was talking about the “brethren”. Brethren who did not work but were busybodies. I prefer to live by this: Hebrews 13:1 Let love of the brethren continue.2 Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by this some have entertained angels without knowing it.3 Remember the prisoners, as though in prison with them, and those who are ill-treated, since you yourselves also are in the body. Prisoners are not just those in jail...but those who are bound by sin, by addiction, by mental illness and wrong thinking...prison comes in many forms. Jesus had compassion on all of these things.

Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers

There's a difference between helping the deserving poor and giving money to a known drug addict, drunk, or lazy bum.

Choosing to aid the latter is a sin against charity. Giving aid indiscriminately may be a simple policy, but it's counter-productive with respect to the welfare of the undeserving poor, as our indiscriminate governmental social welfare programs prove.

Since when is hospitality giving money? Giving aid comes in many forms..neglecting the downtrodden....even if self inflicted, is not what God has called us to do.
