That’s very true.
General statement follows...
But what ‘we’ have to admit and address before any hope of progress on the issue is the fact that many so called ‘conservatives’ are making every excuse under the sun about people like Rubio and his Dream act BS and Perry with his ‘no real fence’ policy. And there are many politicos refereed to as ‘conservatives’ that are just as bad.

Empowering people who oppose border control is the source of the problem. I don’t care what excuses people make. When ‘we’ collectively speaking support these types, we collectively are killing our own country. And none of the excuses I hear about ‘purity’ are anything but an attempt at self-justification by people too utterly balless to admit their lack of moral courage.

We will never win this war as long as our supposedly own people are fighting against what they claim to believe in.

/Rant

We noticed a definite change in the attitude of the people there around 1982 or so, and we stopped going.

Interesting comment. How did their attitude change?

The best thing we could have done for Mexico is controlled our border. Forcing the people to stay would have been incentive to make things better.

In 1980 we drove from Kansas City to Manzanillo with another couple. Spent a couple of nights in Monterey and Guadalajara before heading over to the west coast for a week. Major problem to worry about then was getting short changed when we bought gasoline. Beautiful country and interesting people.

About fifteen years ago we began going to Brownsville/Port Isabel every year at Christmas for about five years. Walked across the bridge into Mexico and all around the Old and New Market. The last couple of years of these trips the number of beggars on the bridge multiplied, more people milling around on the street and there was a general sense of unease. Now I wouldn’t even go south of Corpus Christi any more.

I doubt seriously if that country or ours will ever be the same again - certainly not in my lifetime.

No problem, because Mexico is coming to you.

My daughter and son-in-law went to Mexico on their honeymoon. The loved it and felt very safe, but they were in a tourist city and the Mexican police (do we trust even them?) surrounded and virtually blockaded the tourist area.

I have a new tourism slogan for Mexico...
“Come to Mexico, the land of Encrapment!” Soon to be exported to an American state near you!

They seemed to have less respect for us tourists, and the cab drivers charged stupid fares for driving short distances, which was supposedly “illegal,” but their adherence to their own laws was deteriorating.

The “security” at the airport was lax and disrespectful, and the “leaving the country” fee went up as well.

We do not vacation where the populace does not realize that their revenue comes from tourism. Even though the hotel where we traditionally stayed was still all right, the rest of the town was seedier and less comfortable.

I understand there is a lot of wonderful sites and beauty in Mexico as well as many fine people. The only problem is I want to be able to survive any where I go.

Cabo San Lucas is still OK, it’s off the smuggling routes and the city fathers go to great lengths to keep out the riffraff. Probably safer than Waikiki or Mission Beach. The rest of it? HELL NO.

Yeah, I can see why you wouldn’t want to go back. Let them stew in their own juices.

In 1980 we drove from Kansas City to Manzanillo with another couple.

In 1977, I went on a geology field trip to Big Bend. Our one night that we planned to cross the border to get some Mexican beer in Mexico, it just happened to be the same day as their election that year and they did not sell any alcohol on election day. So, we turned back without getting any beers. I do remember that going into Mexico at the time there was a chance you might get robbed, but no one thought they might be kidnapped or beheaded.

I was in Cozumel last Friday, didn’t venture out of the cruise port tourist trap.

I remember we were advised to take some extra U.S. dollars in case we were involved in an auto accident so we could pay the local police, particularly in and around Guadalajara. We women were also told not to go into old Monterey at night unless we were covered from head to toe so we stayed at our hotel outside of the city. Kids selling Chiclets everywhere but we never feared for our life.

Too bad those that would fight against the cartels are not able to arm themselves. I would think there are more of them that the drug lords. Instead of letting them all come to the U.S., we should just send in a potful of troops to take them and their illegal government leaders and police out.

Vacation in Cancun every year (was there 2 months ago), Puerto Vallarta last year, TJ several times a year and going to Los Cabos next month. I aways rent a car and drive around the coutryside. Never had one safety issue, ever.

Not saying Mexico is the safest place in the world, but I like my odds there better than Detroit (where I grew up).

So sad. Mexico used to be a Fabulous place for Americans to vacation after Cuba fell to Castro. It was great for a couple of decades there. Not any more.

I will never set foot in Mexico. There is no point and everything to lose. Too bad because it has some really very beautiful places.

I’ve always felt I was born to late. I really wish I had been born 30 years earlier and graduated college in 1950 instead of the 1980.

My cousin and his friends went to Mexico for spring break. Jailed the first night and bailed and bailed the next day. Bail was every penny they had on them, which was a lot. Went home the next day.

You have to be crazy to take your chances in Mexico if you are an obvious Gringo. If you look very indian Hispanic and speak fluently, you are probably mostly left alone. If you are a lily white english speaker, good luck with that.

Went to Cozumel & Chichen Itza about 30 years ago. Wouldn’t set foot anywhere south of the border now.
