MIDLAND CITY, Ala. – The Alabama man who held a 5-year-old boy captive for nearly a week engaged in a firefight with SWAT agents storming his underground bunker before he was killed during the rescue operation, the FBI said Tuesday night. Also, bomb technicians scouring his rural property found two explosive devices, one in the bunker, one in a plastic pipe that negotiators used to communicate with the man.

Officers killed 65-year-old Jimmy Lee Dykes Monday, said an official in Midland City, speaking on condition of anonymity. The bunker raid came six days after Dykes boarded a school bus, fatally shot the driver and abducted the boy, who by all accounts was unharmed.

Armorer.....Yes he was a fobbit.

But in ‘08, there wasn’t much going on there. It was more Iraqi vs Iraqi.

From Easter Sunday(’08) thru the end of the month, insurgents and Sadr’s folks lobbed indirect fire at least 5 or 6 times a day. You could pretty much set your watch to it. I was at the embassy and in the IZ during that time, I want to say in all that time and all that indirect fire, only 1 or 2 people were killed. The injured were mostly sprained ankles, etc from running to the bunkers.

If that's the case, I'd want to look at this guy as a nutjob whose mental problems predated his service. I have to wonder about the extent to which corners were cut in the recruitment process because quality personnel stayed out due to PC rules of engagement.

From what I’ve been reading, turns out he wasn’t even an armorer as first reported.

Former members of his unit are coming out now stating that he was a mechanic or some type of support guy and never ever left the confines of where he was assigned.

Its sad that the guys that actually need and deserve the benefits for things like PTSD, have it watered down by POS’s like this a**hole.

It's possible that the guy wasn't even mental. Maybe they asked him about what he did in the military and made fun of the BS he spouted. Whereupon he waited until their backs were turned and unloaded on them. All out of wounded pride (and maybe substance abuse).
