(CNN) -- The former Army staff sergeant who was awarded the Medal of Honor by President Barack Obama Monday is declining the first lady's invitation to be her guest at Tuesday's State of the Union address.
Clint Romesha, who was awarded the prestigious medal for uncommon valor in Afghanistan, told CNN that he has decided to spend the evening with friends from his former unit, Black Knight Troop, 3-61 CAV, his wife Tammy -- with whom he celebrates a wedding anniversary Tuesday -- and their families.

I agree. Romesha is the real deal, and don’t think that it was hard to decline the invitation to be feted by POTUS. Turning down the offer to have the spotlight one more time requires true valor. Obviously he is making a statement, but will the low information voter know or care?

I'm not interpreting any more of this than what the soldier said. He wants to spend the time with his wife and friends and I'm ok with that explanation............
Anyone attempting to read his thoughts and "assume" his real motivation are way out of line and grasping for straws.......

Clint Romesha: "You go, Clint Romesha, you go!"
Thanks to Clint Romesha for his service to our country.
And, Happy Anniversary to the Romeshas!
To: Arthurio
Amy Vanderbilt, Emily Post, or some other expert on etiquette once wrote that the only acceptable reason to decline a White House invitation is if you will be out of the country. I think today an anniversary is sufficient for good manners. In this particular case, I admire our Medal of Honor recipient both for making the right decision given the person who wanted to use him for political gain and the subtlety with which he politely declined.

Now, that I think about it, my sock drawer needs rearranging, too!
We Will DVR, or whatever the initials are, and only look at it later, if at all, in case there is another Joe "you lie" Wilson moment. I think that it his name = Joe Wilson.

One military courtesy CMOH recipients enjoy is that everyone else salutes *you* regardless of rank, subordinate, peer, or superior.
So, the bat-eared-b@st@rd rates saluting SFC Romesha!

The guy has class. I have little doubt he’d like to spit in the African communist scumbag’s face, but instead made up a respectful excuse.

And count your fingers afterwards, if asked to shake hands with him for the cameras.

I won't even watch his speech tonight. I will learn all that I want to know tomorrow on FR.
Thank you, Jim Robinson, for Free Republic.

I think it’s a safe bet that he wasn’t invited there out of respect - rather he was invited there to be a prop for the President, and he’s smart enough to know that.
Great kid!!!

After reading The Outpost, by Jake Tapper, I understand SSGT Romesha and his solid decisions. This man is a rock and has firm convictions, integrity and honor. Maybe we can see him or a man like him lead our country some day.

Yes, this soldiers wants to spend the time with his wife and friends.....AND NOT WITH OBOZO OR THE MOOCH. The unspoken meaning is understood loud and clear. You can be sure the dictator heard it. And so have we, for which we give thanks to this young soldier. He knows the enemy when he see it and he deals with it accordingly, be it in Afghanistan or in OUR White House.
