Gov. Jerry Brown ought to cut his Texas brother, Rick Perry, a little slack.
Texas Gov. Perry arrived in the Golden State this week trolling for California businesses he could poach and carry home with him in his saddlebags. His trip here comes on the heels of a Texas radio come-on, which aired statewide, and which Brown memorably dismissed as "barely a fart."
But there are reasons why Perry's efforts deserve more serious scrutiny.
One is that the campaign exposes an important shortcoming of Texas' job-development program: It focuses on using incentives to steal jobs from other states because it's not so hot at creating jobs from scratch. Some of the jobs it has managed to attract are low-skilled manufacturing, call centers, etc., which can just as easily leave when another state decides to offer a better incentive than Texas. Sooner or later, one will.
Many of Texas' most highly touted victories, moreover, involve companies that may well have located some employees in Texas even without incentives, which means that Texas wasted its money. For example, Apple made a deal last year to employ 3,600 workers in Austin, the location of the University of Texas and the closest thing to a high-tech hub in the state. The median pay of those workers will be $40,000, according to state officials, who will fork over $13.6 million to Apple for the score.
Still, Brown should be more circumspect. Perry's foray into California should cause shame, not gloating, in Sacramento. Texas would find it much harder to poach in California if this state did even a tiny bit to serve its small manufacturers, who are — Texas is right! — beset with high costs and regulatory constraints.

Horsecrap. Austin has some high-tech, Richardson (DFW) has some high-tech, other places have high-tech. Austin just happens to be the most liberal high-tech area. Leave it to the LAT to ignore the rest of the state.

Author fails to mention that one’s salary can be lower in TX because the cost of living in TX is lower. Housing is much, much lower. You don’t need to make $200,000 per year just to be able to afford a crappy, 30 yr. old, 1,400 sq foot home (which will cost you upwards of $300,00-$500,00, depending on location).

The cost of housing in Kalifornia is ridiculous. I also get roped into some of those HGTV shows from the NE and Canada with my wife where people are paying $700K for a 30 year old POS 3 br 2 ba with only 1800 sq feet. That is a $100K or less house down here.
Down here you can buy a brand new custom built 4/3 for between $250K and $500K depending on the area and amenities.

Location, location, location! Agreed, home prices in Texas are a lot lower. But they are because they have to be to attract buyers. If Texas were really experiencing a boom in new residents, home prices would rise. The difference is the cost of land. In Texas, you run off the rattlesnakes and tarantulas and voila, you have a “homesite.” I can think of a dozen states I’d rather move to than Texas!
And I enthusiastically support your decision.

Can you say Dell, AT&T, Verizon, Texas Inst. and oh yea all those services companies like EDS, where Perot made his first billion, that was bought by HP...of and the little company called compaq that is now why HP is #1 in PC sales...please Tx has plenty of tech especially in the phone and services industries.

Better lattes than outhouses! It is laughable that you equate “living” in Texas with other more suitable locales. In order to “get” what you want in terms of government, you have to take a real step downward in terms of “quality of life.” The summertime humidity in Texas would put off most Californians, along with the bugs!

Again another asset. I am not in the same camp that we need to entice everyone to move here.

To each his own said the lady as she kissed the cow! BTW, you don’t have to worry about Texas being “over populated” with “foreigners,” there are a lot of us for whom living in Texas would be far worse that staying where we are.
