Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) just announced that hell be placing a hold on the nomination of John Brennan for CIA director until he receives answers to his questions about the administrations use of drones.
I have asked Mr. Brennan if he believed that the President has the power to authorize lethal force, such as a drone strike, against a U.S. citizen on U.S. soil, and my question remains unanswered. I will not allow a vote on this nomination until Mr. Brennan openly responds to the questions and concerns my colleagues and I share, Paul said.
These issues must be discussed openly so that the American people can understand what constraints exist on the governments power to use lethal force against its citizens, he continued. Before confirming Mr. Brennan as the head of the CIA, it must be apparent that he understands and will honor the protections provided to every American by the Constitution.
Paul sent letters to Brennan on Jan. 25 and Feb. 12 asking a long list of questions about the drone program. Answering these most basic of questionsespecially those dealing with the power of the federal government to kill its own citizens under secret authorizations never to be seen by the publicis a necessary step in the examination of our conduct around the globe, the protection of our Constitutional rights and our values, as well as your suitability to oversee these priorities as the Director of the CIA, he wrote in the earlier letter.
In the second letter, Paul added even more questions in the wake of Brennans nomination hearing.
Before you are confirmed to head the CIA, it must be apparent that you understand and will honor the protections provided to every American by the Constitution. For that reason, I request again that you answer the questions I have submitted, both in this letter and the one before it, and I will object to all unanimous consent requests relating to your nomination until you have done so, he said.
That’s a very good question. No one individual in govt. should be permitted to serve as judge, jury, and executioner without a trial....including Obama or the LAPD.
They work to serve the citizens and enforce laws. They are not dictators or executioners and that aspect needs to be addressed promptly before it gets out of hand.
I actually do not know why Rand Paul is all wigged out about this, he will in the end do what the Republican leadership say to do.
He makes lots of noise but votes with them in the end.
I would like to hear someone question Brennan on his conversion to Islam, was it while he was station chief in Riyadh as reported.
More likely in an al Qaeda training camp..../s
I was going to say the same thing.
Why doesn't he ask him about his connection to the Muslim Brotherhood, while he's at it? His good friend, Glen Beck, played an audio of an [retired] FBI agent, outling how Brennan is connected with the MB and has converted to Islam.
The blue blood country clubbers in the Senate GOP don't have the balls.
They would rather confirm a muzzie for head of the CIA than risk not getting reelected.
Its all about them staying in DC and holding on to their power and perks and pensions, they could care less about national security.
outling = outlining
Yep
Brennan is obviously a man with a very expansive view of the president’s war power to kill enemies (deemed combatants) foreign and domestic. Of course Barry had a totally restrictive view of Bush’s war powers.
Brennan is in so tight with Barry that he can sit there and refuse to call waterboarding “torture” (which it is not IMO) when no other Democrat or nominee could get away with that without being attacked in the MSM.
It is not much of a jump for Brennan to support domestic lethal drone strike authorization, especially when, IMO, he probably knows that such strikes have been authorized on US soil at a minimum to defend Barry for years.
If they confirm a commie mussie they will NEVER be re-elected.
