The country's largest prison companies are generating huge profits as the U.S. locks up more undocumented immigrants than ever, and an Associated Press review shows the businesses are spending tens of millions on lobbying and political campaigns.
The cost to American taxpayers is on track to top $2 billion for this year, and the companies are expecting their biggest cut of that yet in the next few years thanks to government plans for new facilities to house the 400,000 immigrants detained annually.
After a decade of expansion, the sprawling, private system runs detention centers everywhere from a Denver suburb to an industrial area flanking Newark's airport, and is largely controlled by just three companies.
The growth is far from over, despite the sheer drop in illegal immigration in recent years.
In 2011, nearly half the beds in the nation's civil detention system were in private facilities with little federal oversight, up from just 10 percent a decade ago.
The companies also have raked in cash from subsidiaries that provide health care and transportation. And they are holding more immigrants convicted of federal crimes in their privately-run prisons.
The financial boom, which has helped save some of these companies from the brink of bankruptcy, has occurred even though federal officials acknowledge privatization isn't necessarily cheaper.
This seismic shift toward a privatized system happened quietly. While Congress' unsuccessful efforts to overhaul immigration laws drew headlines and sparked massive demonstrations, lawmakers' negotiations to boost detention dollars received far less attention.
The industry's giants Corrections Corporation of America, The GEO Group, and Management and Training Corp. have spent at least $45 million combined on campaign donations and lobbyists at the state and federal level in the last decade, the AP found.

FOLLOW THE MONEY!
They influence immigration policy...some people make $ from criminal illegal aliens and want the flow to grow!!! John McCain got $71,000 from them in 2008.
“Why doesn’t Obama demand Mexico raise it’s minimum wage?”
Good question, Bob....no one demands anything of Mexico! Especially it’s citizens. They seem to love it the way it is.
They just want to turn this country into more of the same.
Chicano Nationalism, Revanchism and the Aztlan Myth
[snip] A June 2002 Zogby poll of Mexicans found that a substantial majority of Mexican citizens believe that southwestern America is rightfully the territory of Mexico and that Mexicans do not need the permission of the U.S. to enter. The poll found that 58 percent of Mexicans agree with the statement, “The territory of the United States’ southwest rightfully belongs to Mexico.” Zogby said 28 percent disagreed, while another 14 percent said they weren’t sure.1

Here in NJ the illegals are necessary to keep whole towns open; without them there would be no schoolchildren, high vacancy rates, and far less consumers.
“Sanctuary cities” are normally places that chased out their working whites (through high taxes, high crime, high unemployment, or any combination of the 3).
Why do illegals and welfare folk flock to our cities? Because they heard there were no jobs there.
What does 20 million people actually look like? (and that isnt counting anchor babies & chain immigration!)

Do you realize if this AMNESTY happens we are in effect creating the equivilent of adding over 17 more states to this country? And thats not even considering the chain migration that is in the Senate bill.
Please look at what giving amnesty to as many as 20,000,000 illegal alien foreign nationals actually represents. More than the population of 16 states and DC!
According to the 2000 census, 18,785,867 is the total populations combined of Wyoming, Dist. of Columbia, Vermont, Alaska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Delaware, Montana, Rhode Island, Hawaii, New Hampshire, Maine, Idaho, Nebraska, West Virginia, New Mexico and Nevada.
THINK about that!
I know exactly what it looks like; it seems all 20 million are in NJ. We have whole areas where you would think (from store signs, billboards, flags, and the foreign chattering around you) that you are in another country; nobody in these areas has ever seen a W-2. In one town businesses were forced to put English on their signs because emergency personnel couldn’t respond effectively to calls (the signs were in Korean & Japanese).
NJ has always been an immigrant state; the only difference is how many of them are now “off the grid”/illegal. We replaced our makers with takers...
“We replaced our makers with takers...”
True that! All the way to the white house.
Is this by any chance referring to “ILLEGAL” immigrants?
Aunt B add another story to the list...Youth asks San Mateo County to stop cooperating with federal immigration authorities
fast forward into story..Though not mandated by law, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, commonly known as ICE, has for more than a decade been encouraging cooperation from state and local agencies in detaining immigrants suspected of being in the country illegally. The collaboration has helped push deportations to record levels in recent yearsup three percent to more than 400,000 in 2012.
For minors who are reported, it means being placed in an ICE hold while in juvenile hall, giving federal authorities 48 hours to retrieve them. From there, they are taken to detention facilities and put into deportation proceedings.
Not all detainees are ultimately deported; exemptions are often granted that allow youth to be reunified with their families. But critics argue that, at best, the months-long process is incredibly disruptive to the lives of young people.
Its not rehabilitating the youth; its actually making it worse, Miranda said. We know of a couple of cases that youth have come back from the facilities they were in, and they come back not wanting to go out, scared, not willing to participate in the community.
Opponents of the juvenile ICE referrals also worry that the practice is vulnerable to error and racial profiling.
Mistakes can be made, said Helen Beasley, an attorney with Community Legal Services in East Palo Alto. A lot of these youth dont understand their own immigration status.
In recent years, this legal and ethical dilemma has been at the center of heated national debates over how far to extend protections and amnesties for undocumented minors. Santa Clara County ended its collaboration with ICE in 2011, adopting a new policy of not reporting any immigrants to the agency that Supervisor George Shirakawa called the most progressive in the nation.

They always are interjecting ripping familied apart.. I can use the same arguement Mexico is ripping families apart. illegals leave mexico and some never see their families again. Many start new families here. I never seen any supporters indicate how mexico should get with the program and start making jobs in mexico so no parents would have to leave the country. The illegals fully expect America to be their new parents..
They always use ripping families on this side of the border but say very little about mexico’s side of the border
Yes

Exactly! Truth is, men often have a family in Mexico and another one here full of squat and drop citizens.
Why are you posting this? Attacks on CCA are exclusively from the pro-amnesty side, such as the deeply-biased Fox News Latino. Amnesty would wreck their business, not enhance it.

No,they are not all from the pro amnesty side. Do you think if there is ‘amnesty’ there will be no more illegal aliens? REALLY? History shows there will be many times more. Who do you think is making sure there will be NO ENFORCEMENT in the new amnesty? Why do they contribute mostly to those who want open borders????
All ‘fox new Latino’ is not pro amnesty....read.
THINK
montag813, the major point here is just more pay to play...and it should be brought out no matter who is getting the $$$. Republicans sure aren’t clean either.
And just wait until the profits expand to large southwest camps.
