After the initial shock came the speculation. Pope Benedict XVI surprised even his closest advisers on Monday by announcing that he was standing down, but within hours the Vatican was awash, not just with the inevitable talk of who would succeed him, but also with whispers about the real story behind the first papal resignation in over 600 years.
Once the curia or Vatican bureaucracy started chewing it over, the theories it spat out were quickly flying around what the papal historian John Cornwell has characterised as a palace of gossipy eunuchs. And from there it is one short step to finding their way into the Italian press.

What is so hard to understand about a decent guy who can no longer carry out his duties because of old age and infirmity
and wanting a strong successor to carry on?
Dan Brown’s execrable plots belong in the toilet.
Oh, their whole lives are a bad Dan Brown type novel that rewrites history.
“. . . about a decent guy . . .”
I know your question is rhetorical, let me say, though, it’s the decency they don’t understand.
They don’t have it, don’t want it, don’recognize it and don’t respect it.
They think the indecent life is the only one worth living. any other kind is pure boredom.
I have to see Yahoo news to log into my email until I change it here away from ATT who are pushing the BSA to go gay. Am subjected to the headlines. Second is “Hugh Grant [bla bla bla]. . .”
I react, “who could possibly care what that indecent person does, says or thins (’feels’) in lib speak.
They see “Pope resigns” and react, “what indecency is driving him to do that? I won’t rest until I come up with something or someone does that for me”.
The Pope’s educational, charitable and life experience credentials are a page long. Yawn. “OK, but how did he get to a position of power. Dont’ tell me it was through work. Won’t listen to that.”
I tried to read one of Dan Brown’s books once. Couldn’t get past the first couple of pages. He writes like an eighth-grader.
It is amusing to hear comments about what a bad writer Dan Brown is. Somebody must be buying his books...
