Todd’s parents, Mary and Rick Todd, raised questions about their son's death that remain unanswered.
Todd, an electronics engineer, had just concluded an 18-month employment with Singapore’s Institute of Microelectronics (IME). He had been developing, in collaboration with Chinese telecom giant Huawei, sophisticated radar and satellite technology for both civilian and military applications.
His mother says that at work, he was “being asked to do things that made him uncomfortable", FT quoted her as saying.
His girlfriend knew that he was increasingly stressed about the nature of his research.
Todd resigned from IME sometime later. Days before his death, he was offered a job by a US research firm working with the US defence department and NASA. On his final working day, Todd was last seen at a farewell lunch with his IME colleagues who described him as looking upbeat.
After acquiring Todd's external hard drive by chance and obtaining a second opinion on his autopsy report, the family now suspect foul play.

There is no way I would ever work for a foreign or international company.
Interesting, detailed and somewhat long article.
Some concerns raised, that it was not suicide. Not sure from the article whether it was, or was not.
If it was not, that raises some serious issues.

I read the story, long and detailed but still no answers but lots of support for belief that things are not as the Singapore Police report them.
Singapore is as close to Stepford as you can get in this world. The appearances must be maintained that it is a prefect society. It is as close to a benevolent dictatorship as you can get. It makes mistakes but covers them up very well.
Mr. Todd was in a bad place and he clearly knew it. But why kill him if he was just trying to leave quietly? China is becoming more and more capitalistic and the people there and the industrialists and power brokers and rich are becoming more greedy every day. History shows us that they are undoubtedly capable of being terribly ruthless.
a foreign company is one thing. doing defense oriented work is another.
once he figured out he was doing sensitive stuff, he should have gone to lunch.. at the embassy ... and got the hell out of dodge without telling anyone he was leaving

My allegiance is to my immediate family first. Remember, God, family, country?

He knew too much information that could hurt his last employer?
my spouse asked me if I would move there, his office was considering opening an office in their greedier days, and I said Absolutely not. He said why not? And I said because of their justice system. Absolutely no never.
I actually like Singapore. It is a society that a person who is comfortable with order and self-restraint for the greater good likes. I usually felt comfortable there.
The answer to people who threw their gum on the ramp at the new train system was to ban ALL gum. Stopped the problem but no more gum though people did continue to have it in their home if they could get it.
The problem though is that the justice can be draconian. Mistakes are not allowed by the perpetrator. All are punished the same. In theory and possibly in practice “smuggling” a pack of gum can have the same consequence as something much worse and thus the problem with the justice system as I see it.
I wonder how many others have died.

The police missed it as it was hidden or there is mole somewhere ?
In my two short visits to Singapore I,too,was rather impressed.A cleaner,more orderly version of Hong Kong IMO.As for punishment...my first memory of the place was in the arrivals/immigration hall seeing the multi language sign saying that Singapore law *requires* the death penalty for drug trafficking.I've read that they do,in fact,hang you for that offense...mostly Australians it would seem.I'll bet there's not a lot of drug smuggling into the country.
