“... counterfeiting the ID cards”

Yeah, good luck with that. Secure cards are cryptographically matched to corresponding secure database entries. The info on the card must match the info in the database via a unique, two-part key. No match = card certificate revocation and ‘bad card’ status.

Unfortunately, we’re talking about the GOP. The Stupid Party. The same party that agreed to the 1982 court decision to never contest Democratic voter fraud ever again.

We’re screwed(again).

Make it double as a voter ID card that must be presented at the voting booth, and the dims will drop the subject.

"making the cards a requirement for voting"

That's the problem. And you have to look at the history.

First it started with the 9-11 commission but congress realized that a national ID was not politically feasible so instead Congress(led by republican James Sensenbrenner) created Real ID and the GOP passed that in 2005. Real ID means that a or all state's driver licenses must comply with Real ID. At first(2005) there was no controversy but by 2007 many libertarian minded dems and pubs had turned against Real ID plus a number of states were opposed for cost reasons. But gradually some states implemented their Real IDs.

Then the GOP figured out that in those states that had implemented Real ID, the Real ID compliant drivers liscense could be used for voter ID. And since the Real ID compliant drivers licsense is hard to get and more costly it could be used to inhibit poor people from voting in 2012.

Because the GOP did this, those dems that had previously supported Real ID turned against it.

Now the GOP is stuck and has to be the party advocating for a national ID.

They track us with our cellphones. Is there some news value in this story?

You can turn your cellphone off or leave it somewhere. You may soon be unable to turn your "ID" off and function in this country.

Corporate America wants the benefit of cheap labor from these immigrants but they don't want to pay the burden of compliance and/or legal sanctions or fines government imposes upon it.

So not only are you to suffer the lowering of your standard of living due to the glut of cheap labor(supply/demand)entering this country, you are to bear the burden for the compliance of the business use of that cheap labor as well.

Add to that a justification and means for the government to be more efficient in their doling out of benefits to the masses that seems reasonable to those masses.

Add to that our worldly masters intention of managing (controlling) the useful eaters and the useless eaters.

A free man doesn't have to ask permission. We are becoming less free. That matters to me.

Immoral/amoral men need laws to prevent chaos. They cry out for a king. One is coming, but not the one they expect.

worry that such a card would eventually — and perhaps inevitably — be used to “track Americans at airports, hospitals, and through other facets of their lives.”"

Nooooooooooo, that would never happen..../s

Lindsey Graham is a tyrannical moron. He also thinks it is just fine to leave it up to the president or some other official to kill Americans if they have some "association" with al-queida. He seems to enjoy destroying our liberties.

Thanks for that concise summary on how we got where we are on Real ID. I’m personally very leary of any advancement on national ID for most any purpose, no matter high-minded or desirable. My general evaluation of the entire situation is one of a culture, a nation, and a government that is rapidly circling the drain and we’re just along for the ride with little hope of putting the plug back in the drain hole.

We already have ID cards to work. They are issued by the Social Security Administration.
