Rand Paul returns unused money from office budget to the government

Would that our bureaucrats had this kind of attitude.

From CNN:

Sen. Rand Paul cut another six-figure check to the United States Treasury Wednesday, taking the money he said he didn't need from his office's budget to make a tiny dent in the nation's massive federal debt.

"We watch every purchase," Paul, a Republican from Kentucky, said at an event next to an oversized check for $600,000. "We watch what computers we buy, what paper we buy, the ink cartridges. We treat the money like it's our money, or your money, and we look at every expenditure."

The $600,000 reflects more than 20% of Paul's annual office budget, according to a press release. Another GOP lawmaker, Rep. Mick Mulvaney of South Carolina, said he would return $160,000 to the federal government, or 12% of his office budget.

"At a time when Americans are tightening their budgets, I have made an effort to do the same with my Congressional office budget," Mulvaney wrote in a statement. "'My office has found ways to save money while continuing to provide necessary services to the constituents of the Fifth District. As requested when I returned over $160,000 last year, I ask that Speaker Boehner use this money to pay down the national debt."

Last year Paul returned $500,000 to the Treasury, and said he hoped other members of Congress would follow his cost-cutting lead. In total, Paul's office says they've returned $1.1 million that was unspent from his office's operating budget.

Last week Paul delivered a tea party-sponsored response to President Barack Obama's State of the Union address. He also said on Sunday that he would decide next year on whether he'll run for president in 2016.

Wow...unheard of. And if he returns 600,000 how much of a budget does each freaking congressman and senator get???

No kidding! If he said that $600K was 20% of his budget, wouldn't that be $3 million?

Good for Rand!

This is Rand Paul's biggest obstacle. People thinking he's his dad.

Quite a few on FR will be leading the attack. The GOP shills on here will be ready to pounce.

According to the article: The $600,000 reflects more than 20% of Paul’s annual office budget, according to a press release. You do the math.

$600,000 is 20% of $3,000,000. That’s just OFFICE BUDGET.

Doesn’t include the others budgets — Personnel, interns, fact-finding missions, studies conducted, etc.

The pentagon could do exactly this same thing and the number would be more than the extra money they are being given this year.

They promised extra money and now they don’t want give as much extra money.

Rand’s example proves they didn’t need to promise extra money to everyone, that the amount they had was already too much.

Its a rare CEO that has the office budget of a U.S. Representative. I’d love to see a true itemization of how some of them spend that budget.

That would be a nice little rule that Boehner could have placed into the House rules. "An itemized list of expenditures must be supplied to every constituent of your district on an annual basis."

$600,000 is 20% of $3,000,000. That’s just OFFICE BUDGET.

And that's just ONE Senator. Multiply by 100 and you get $300 MILLION just for Senators' budgets! Add to that whatever each Representative gets and WOW!!

I wonder what Jesse Jr. would have done with the money. Another remodel? 30-day world cruise? Ferrari?

He may indeed be the only chance we have to stop out of control statists in the 2016 election.

I like Rand. I wish Cruz had a couple more years under his belt for 2016 - if he's even eligible. Governor Walker just disappointed today me with his cave on obamamediscare. I was hoping he would run, but now, meh...

First of all, Cruz can not do it. As a diehard Constitution lover, he’d be the first to say that, because of his Canadian birth he’s not NBC.
Not knocking Cruz, he’s my man!

In 2012 Rand needed some years more in grade. In 16 if he keeps nipping their heels like recently, he would be a force for the left to fear.
